Now, it may seem like an obvious question to those who utilise it, but many people don’t understand why men’s underwear has a double layered hole in the front.
In fact, the question of the boxer hole – also called a flap or fly – has come up many times on internet sites like Reddit, Quora and Yelp over the years.
And, lots of underwear brands have even begun to remove the flap in favour of a flatter front.
So, considering we’ve just discovered why ladies’ pants have a secret pocket inside them we decided to find out exactly why it’s there in the first place.
The most obvious answer is that some men use this hole to go to the loo.
Underwear brand Sheath’s website, said: “The hole in your boxers is also called a fly.
“You’re free to call them whatever name you want, but the functional term is still fly. Why is it there? You guessed it!
“The purpose of the fly is to make it easier for you to pee while wearing boxers.”
But, it added that only 20% of men use the hole in their boxers to urinate as everyone else simply pulls their pants down.
So, is there another reason for the fly?
Sheath added: “Today's modern underwear is nothing like what men wore even a few decades ago.
“The actual pouch where the fly is located has also been changing drastically. In the past, this area used to be flat. This design does not give the man a natural way for his penis to be contoured.
“Thankfully, men today have a better option. New boxer briefs and men's briefs have a design that actually has a roomier pouch. This new pouch design gives the man more definition, comfort, support, and freedom.”
Makes sense. The fly is there to provide extra comfort, support and a more modest peeing option.
Over on Reddit however, the subject of the boxer fly was somewhat controversial.
One person asked: “Does anyone actually use the hole in the front of underwear? Seems easier just to pull em down to use the bathroom.”
A bloke replied: “I unzip my pants, then pull my d*** through the hole to pee. It's faster because I don't have to re-tuck my shirt when I'm done or mess with the belt.”
Another added: “If you're dressed casually, it's no big deal. If you're carefully tucked in, wearing a belt & other such sh*t it's a lot handier.”
“If you're at a public urinal, you probably don't want to pull down your pants,” a third noted.
While a woman was surprised and added: “This is something I never thought about as a lady.
“Obviously I've seen the holes in men's underwear, and I've seen plenty of dudes pee standing up, but it didn't really click that guys can pee without having to untuck/undo everything.”
But, some blokes argued that boxers would be better off without the hole – as they’d had incidents where their privates had slipped through the gap while wearing loose shorts and they’d rather have a secure pair of pants.
Looks like he’d prefer the flap-less briefs some retailer’s sell!
