People are only just noting the difference between fish and chips in US and UK

Fish and chips is one of our national dishes – so when the Friday night staple is messed with, it can leave us feeling rather angry.

This was definitely the case when a Brit tried to order the comforting meal in the US.

Instead of getting deep-fried cod and a wagon-load of chunky chips, they were left sorely disappointed.

"Chips” is a term used to describe crisps in the US, which can lead to the order being lost in translation.

And we’re not sure Americans know much about curry sauce, mushy peas or battered scraps either.

According to the Mirror, one Reddit user recently moaned: "I have ordered 'fish and chips' in Santa Barbara and was served potato chips."

Another said they spotted a similar problem during a business trip to Illinois, when a town's annual fair included a stall claiming to sell "Traditional British Fish and Chips".

"I didn’t have the heart to tell them," the commenter added.

And earlier this week, a third accused their work cafeteria of a “crime agains humanity” and “hate crime”.

In the American kitchen, they were served a packet of crisps alongside fish.

A Twitter user experienced similar woes last year.

A diner was keen to show off their sad-looking portion of "fish and 'chips'", which again featured cod and crisps.

"So, so disturbing!" their friend commented.

Leave the fish and chips to us, please!
