Pete Davidson Calls It Quits With Emotional Saturday Night Live Goodbye

Pete Davidson bid an emotional farewell to Saturday Night Live last night during his final appearance on the show. The comedian took a moment to thank everyone involved with the show before discussing far he’d come since joining the cast 8 years ago—admitting that he’d become “hugely successful” despite “barely showing up for work.”

Davidson joined the cast of SNL in 2014 at the age of 20, making him one of the youngest to join the roster during the show’s five-decade history. The Suicide Squad actor appeared one last time on the show’s Weekend Update segment, as he often did, to recognize just how far his career has come.

“I never imagined this would be my life,” Davidson said. “Back then, I was just a skinny kid that no one knew which race I was. And now everyone knows I’m White because I became hugely successful while barely showing up to work. Look at me now, I’m aging like an old banana.”

Davidson went on to thank showrunner Lorne Michaels, who didn’t initially think he was the right guy for the show—but took a chance on him anyway. He recalled his first audition for the show when Michaels “looked me right in the eye” and told him: “‘I don’t think you’re right for this show, so let’s screw this up together.’”

“And that’s exactly what we did,” Davidson said. “And that’s why people who don’t think I deserve this job shouldn’t hate me since we have so much in common. Like, if anything I should be inspire hope that literally anyone could be on Saturday Night Live.”

Davidson also shared an emotional message about his exit hours before his final episode.

“This video was taken 8 years ago. Jerrod sent it to me last night and it made me super emotional in the best way. In the video, I had just gotten back from doing my very first update and sketch,” he wrote in the lengthy goodbye posted to SNL writer Dave Sirus‘ Instagram. “It’s crazy to think that today I’ll be doing my last one.”

Davidson’s girlfriend, Kim Kardashian, is currently in Italy attending her sister Kourtney Kardashian’s wedding to rocker Travis Barker—but took time to acknowledge the moment. Kardashian shared a sweet collage to her Instagram, showing how much her beau has changed over the years.

The King of Staten Island star leaves behind a paltry $15,000 per episode salary. The comedian was required to commute to and from New York City, where filming took place, and California, where Kim is based.
