The PGA of America is distancing itself from President Donald Trump.
The organization announced on Sunday night that the 2022 PGA Championship would no longer be held at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The decision came days after the Capitol riots, in which a large group of pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building.
"The PGA of America Board of Directors voted tonight to exercise the right to terminate the agreement to play the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster," PGA President Jim Richerson said in a statement.
In a statement to ABC News and the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the Trump Organization said they were "incredibly disappointed" in the PGA of America's decision.
"This is a breach of a binding contract and they have no right to terminate the agreement," said the spokesperson. "As an organization we have invested many, many millions of dollars in the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump National Golf Club, Bedminster. We will continue to promote the game of golf on every level and remain focused on operating the finest golf courses anywhere in the world."
The PGA of America, made up of nearly 29,000 golf professionals and responsible for hosting the annual PGA Championship, signed the deal with Trump National in 2014 to host the 2022 championship, according to the AP.
In 2015, the organization canceled the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Trump National Los Angeles Golf Club after Trump, 74, called Mexican immigrants "rapists" when he first announced his run for president.
The violence on Jan. 6 led to the deaths of five people, including a Capitol Police officer, who sustained injuries "while physically engaging with protesters" at the riots. A second Capitol Police officer was later confirmed to have died on Sunday, though a cause of death was not given.
Trump, who failed for hours to condemn the violent mob ransacking the Capitol or to tell them to go home, has remained relatively quiet since the attack, given the permanent suspension of his verified Twitter account.
Many lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle have since called for Trump's resignation.
