Prince William's 'curt' message to Prince Harry on his birthday

Prince William’s ‘curt’ message to Prince Harry on his birthday showed their relationship is still ‘icy’ and they are no closer to making up, royal expert claims

  • Royal author Duncan Larcombe told The Sun the brothers are still at odds
  • Said Prince William, 39, did ‘bare minimum’ to mark his brother’s 37th birthday
  • Claims it shows the two brothers still have icy relations and are ‘warring clans’

The short message Prince William shared to mark Prince Harry’s 37th birthday yesterday shows the brothers still have ‘icy’ relations, a royal expert has claimed.

Royal author Duncan Larcombe told The Sun that Prince William, 39, did the ‘bare minimum’ to mark his younger brother’s special day as he celebrated across the pond in California.

The second-in-line to the throne shared: ‘Happy Birthday Prince Harry,’ yesterday on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Twitter and Instagram account.

This very ‘simple’ birthday wishes come after Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie – who penned the biography with Carolyn Durand and released an updated version last month – said Duke and Duchess of Sussex are ‘making very little progress’ in reconciling with the royal family.

And Duncan Larcombe claimed that the short message penned by William showed  just how much tense the relationship between the two brothers still is.

Royal author Duncan Larcombe said the short message, pictured, penned by Prince William, 39, to mark Prince Harry’s birthday yesterday shows that the two brothers are not ready to make up

‘William and Kate’s curt birthday message to Harry only serves as proof the ice between the brothers has still not thawed,’ Duncan said.

‘Short of ignoring the Duke of Sussex’s 37th landmark completely, their social media post was the bare minimum from a couple who once welcomed Harry as their official “royal gooseberry”,’ Duncan said.

‘If anything, this year’s birthday wishes from the Cambridges are an indication of just how far relations between the two warring clans have deteriorated over the past 12 months,’ he added.

To mark the Duke of Sussex’s previous birthdays, the Cambridges social accounts used pictures of William and Harry together.

In 2020, the royal family shared a unifying picture showing Kate Middleton, 39, Prince William and Prince Harry racing one another at an event, pictured

In 2020, they picked a picture of William, Kate Middleton, 39 and Harry racing one another during a joint engagement prior to his wedding to Meghan Markle.

In 2019, they used a snap of the two brothers in uniform, chatting in St George Chapel in Windsor ahead of Harry’s 2018 wedding to Meghan.

But this year, they went for a solo picture of Harry smiling, which was ‘surprising’ to Duncan, who suggested they could have picked a picture of the last engagement William and Harry had together: the unveilling of their mother Princess Diana’s statue in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden on July 1.

He said that a phot of the brothers together would have  sent a message of ‘unity’.

Rumours of a rift between Prince Harry and the royal family have been circulating since before Megxit, with relations taking a further blow following Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March this year.

Meanwhile Prince William and Harry are said to have barely spoken and have an ‘incredibly strained’ relationship after two years of rows over Harry’s wife and her alleged treatment of staff, the couple’s decision to emigrate to America and the ‘truth bombs’ the Sussexes have dropped in TV interviews watched by tens of millions of people around the world.

The couple’s biographer Omid Scobbie said the Sussexes were ‘desperate to get their story out there’.

Appearing on Good Morning America, Omid claimed there’s been a stalemate because both sides want each other to take ‘accountability and ownership’ for their role in the rift.

He explained: ‘When we speak to sources close to the couple and also sources close to the royal family, there is this feeling that very little progress is being made.’

Meanwhile, a source recently claimed that Duchess of Cornwall is unlikely to ever forgive her stepson Prince Harry for their actions since stepping back as senior royals in March last year.

Harry has addressed his relationship with his father in several interviews throughout the year – after first opening up about it in a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March where he claimed he has been ‘let down’ by Prince Charles.

Writing in The Telegraph, royal expert Camilla Tominey reported that a source close to Camilla has said that even though Buckingham Palace is conveying the message that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are still loved by the family, the Duchess of Cornwall will struggle to move on.

Another source claimed that Prince Charles was deeply affected by the reported fall out with Prince Harry and that it had been ‘really hard for him.’
