Princess Anne, 70, is the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, 94, and a senior working member of the Royal Family. When she is with the children of Zara Tindall, 39, a body language expert suggested she is very “affectionate”.
Princess Anne has been a working member of the Royal Family for more than 50 years.
Away from her public role, the Princess Royal is a mother of two and is about to become a grandmother for the fifth time, since Zara and Mike Tindall announced they are expecting again.
She already has four grandchildren, Savannah Phillips, 10, Isla Phillips, eight, Mia Grace Tindall, seven, and Lena Elizabeth Tindall, two.
It is likely Princess Anne has spent a lot of time with Zara’s children over the years as they are neighbours.
The royal women all live at Gatcombe Park, which is a royal estate in Gloucestershire.
It is here Princess Anne has often been seen playing with her young grandchildren.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, body language expert Judi James claimed the royal has often shown public affection with her grandchildren.
Commenting on one picture, she stated: “Carrying her granddaughter high on her torso, Anne ensures some very direct communication with a lot of eye-gazing and face-closeness.”
Princess Anne’s upbringing is often thought to have been rather hands-off.
In the National Georgraphic documentary Being The Queen, royal biographer Tim Heald explained the Queen’s children rarely saw her for more than “half an hour a day”.
He said: “It wasn’t that anybody was being deliberately unkind or cold… it was just the way you did things.
“Keep in mind that running the monarchy is a full-time job times 20, so things like family time fall through the cracks,” he added to Glamour magazine.
With her grandchildren, however, Princess Anne has arguably adopted a more hands-on and affectionate approach with her family.
Judi added: “This allows her granddaughter to feel involved and important.
“It is in direct contrast to the more hands-off upbringing Anne had herself, when royal children tended to be kept on the ground to act like little adults in public.”
The expert added it is unusual for Princess Anne to show such displays of affection in public.
Zara, on the other hand, is known for being tactile which could suggest her mother was more hands-on behind closed doors.
Both Zara and Princess Anne are publicly affectionate with their grandchildren, Judi added.
“Princess Anne has never been a lover of the PDA, posing in a more traditional, hands-off way with two husbands and her own children,” she said.
“However, the way that daughter Zara has emerged as a wonderfully tactile and openly affectionate woman suggests there might have been a very different version of her mother away from the cameras.
“With her grandchildren though we do finally get to see the more demonstrative side to the Princess.”
