Princess Charlene of Monaco showed off her motherly side this week as she joined her husband Prince Albert to open a nursery.

The 44-year-old Olympic swimmer looked elegant in a black ensemble which she paired with a camel coat as she inaugurated the Testimonio II Nursery in Monaco Town Hall.

At one stage, the mother-of-two crouched down to chat with one little boy who had presented her with a posey of flowers, placing a reassuring hand on his arm.

She was joined by her husband Prince Albert, 64, for the outing this week, with the two posing for pictures with members of the nursery’s staff.

It comes as the couple prepare for their upcoming appearance at King Charles’ coronation in May – after Prince Albert of Monaco became the first European royal to confirm their attendance.

In snaps which were shared online of the visit, the couple appeared in high spirits as they visited the nursery.

They could be seen chatting with members of staff who were delivering and serving lunch to a number of youngsters who were in attendance.

Meanwhile Princess Charlene also bent down to chat with one young boy, who appeared to have presented her with a posey of flowers.

The royal mother-of-two was elegant for the outing this week, donning a black polo neck jumper and a pair of black trousers for the occasion.

She completed the chic look with a pair of black heels, which she covered with green bags during her visit into the nursery.

Meanwhile she wore her short hair cropped, sweeping her blonde locks to one side and tucking it behind her ear.

Earlier this year,  Monaco’s crown prince told PEOPLE, he and his wife Princess Charlene would attend Charles’ coronation in May, adding: ‘I’m certain that it’s going to be an incredible ceremony and a very moving one.’

The event will be amongst the highest profile attended by Charlene since her recent illness, which saw her spending 11 months away from the Mediterranean principality in her native South Africa, undergoing treatment for an unspecified condition.

Albert added: ‘We’ve maintained contact since His Majesty became King, but I haven’t talked to him personally since the Queen’s funeral.’

The prince, who is looking forward to attending the king’s coronation, added: ‘I’m certain His Majesty will add his own ‘personal touches’ to the ceremonies, but what those will be, I’m sure I don’t know.’

Prince Albert went onto reveal that himself and his wife  Princess Charlene, will definitely be at the ceremony to watch the king’s crowning, however their 8-year-old twins Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella might be ‘too young’.

And months ago he praised Charlene for ‘turning it around in an incredible way’ after a long-running health battle.

Speaking in December, the 64-year-old royal told People he was ‘really proud of my wife,’ adding: ‘Charlene’s doing really well.’

He continued: ‘As you know, last year was a very tough year for her – and the beginning of this year.’

Albert added that after being admitted to a Swiss treatment facility for exhaustion and keeping out of the limelight, Charlene has been ‘active in any number of different events.’

‘She’s really enjoying doing things together and with the kids, so this year is ending on a very, a very high note. We’re truly thrilled about how things are,’ Albert said.
