The relationship between Kate, Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle has been highly speculated, but a royal commentator has claimed they were “frosty but polite” towards one another.
While the public don’t truly know what has gone on between the two ladies – if anything has – or the extent of their relationship both before and after Meghan and Prince Harry left for California, Tessa Dunlop suggested Kate and Meghan were “clearly not that close”, adding: “I think we can work that one out”.
Tessa also spoke about how different she believes the two women are, and puts it down to their upbringings.
She said Kate “is a well-mannered girl” who was “brought up in a public school” and will “never dish the dirt”.
Tess expanded: “She’s never going to give what others want, no matter how often you pick the scab.
“There’s going to be a lid on that relationship and it will remain decorous in public”.
While Kate grew up in Buckinghamshire and attended St Andrews University, Meghan “came from Hollywood” with Tessa noting her dad, Thomas Markle “was a reasonably successful lighting director”.
The royal commentator also noted the “very different environment(s)” the two ladies were in.
“Hollywood it’s about climbing over other people to get that role, to get the gig, to improve the rating to be better than the next one – that’s ambition,” she claimed.

Whereas Kate “spent years training” for her royal role “without even realising it”, resulting in her valuing “deference” and “appropriate levels of self possession within a system” where you “don’t rock the boat” but “make change through embracing the institution”.
She claimed the Duchess of Sussex was a “paradox” of Kate, adding “Meghan’s the other way around”, suggesting they are “inverted versions of each other” to OK! magazine.
Things apparently changed following the birth of Princess Lilibet, with Kate “reaching out to Meghan” and “sending [notes and] gifts” to “try and build up a relationship”, an unnamed source told Us.
A month later, a separate source said the two ladies’ relationship was getting better, with Kate and Meghan “getting along” and “have been in touch more often”.
But the source did say the ladies’ “relationship was never close” but they were “working on it for the sake of the family”.
However, since Lilibet’s birthday, there have been several important occasions which might’ve altered the women’s relationship.
Queen Elizabeth II died and Harry and Meghan flew over for her funeral, then the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan aired, followed by Harry’s book Spare being published, with several TV appearances following to discuss details written.
Harry said “the ball is very much in their [Kate and William] court” and wishes a “constructive conversation” would happen, but says “that can [only] happen in private that doesn’t get leaked”.
As for when the next time the public will see Kate and Meghan together, the latter is not attending King Charles’ coronation next month.
Buckingham Palace has confirmed only Harry will be in attendance while his wife stays in California with their two children.
It is also Prince Archie’s birthday on the same day as the coronation and he will be turning four years old.
