Crystal Kung Minkoff may be new to “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” but she’s already comfortable sharing her past struggles with the ladies.
The newly minted Bravolebrity revealed to Lisa Rinna, Dorit Kemsley, Sutton Stracke, Kathy Hilton and Kyle Richards on Wednesday’s episode that she used to suffer from bulimia.
“I’m a recovering bulimic,” she said at Richards’ election night party. “And I say recovering because I don’t know what it’s like to be any other thing.”
Kung Minkoff explained to the group that she began struggling with disordered eating when she was just 11 years old. She said it’s now “under control” and that she is not “suffering on the daily” with it.
Kung Minkoff added in a confessional that her battle with bulimia began after she watched a video about eating disorders in school.
While she acknowledged that the video “obviously” had a “negative message,” Kung Minkoff recalled picking “up tools from it, and that’s when it began.”
She said that her bulimia was at its worst at the end of high school and into her college years, which allowed her to keep it from her parents.
Kung Minkoff also told the group that she believed part of her “sickness” was her ability to talk about it openly because it made her “normal.”
Elsewhere in the episode, she revealed that she had lost five pounds after the cast’s trip to Lake Tahoe due to the stress she was feeling from her arguments with Stracke, 49.
“I just want the girls to know how hyperaware I am of my weight and sort of the struggles I go through,” she said in a confessional.
The “Housewives” thanked Kung Minkoff for sharing her story, and Rinna, 57, later told her and her husband, Rob Minkoff, that she appreciated her openness because Rinna’s daughter Amelia Gray Hamlin has struggled with anorexia.
Later in the episode, Minkoff, 58, told Kung Minkoff that he was shocked she had opened up to the ladies about her eating disorder because she “likes food.”
“I love food,” the reality star replied. “And I always wanted to say I loved it. And that was really hard … I couldn’t admit liking food because I had so much shame around food.”
Kung Minkoff went on to explain that her body image issues were rooted in her childhood, saying, “I had always felt like the chubby one — wanting to be blonde, blue-eyed and skinny. I totally wanted to be American, and what that meant to me as a child was white.”
The couple, who married in 2007, also discussed how they talk about their bodies in front of their young daughter, Zoe. Kung Minkoff said that whenever Zoe says she has skinny legs, she reminds Zoe that they’re healthy because she works out.
“It’s so much work to, like, get her to not use those terms,” she remarked.
“The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo.
