Rishi Sunak arrives at The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards and meets incredible nominees for best nurse & midwife | The Sun

RISHI Sunak arrived at The Sun's annual Who Cares Wins Awards this evening, where he met NHS heroes nominated for a top prize.

The PM will give a speech at the glamorous event before presenting a major award.

The Who Cares Wins Awards will this week celebrate heroes from across the health sector.

Our glittering ceremony – presented by Davina McCall and sponsored by The National Lottery – will see celebrities including Anthony Joshua, Jamie Oliver, Harry Redknapp, Mel B, Olivia Attwood, Susanna Reid, Ellie Simmonds and Katie Piper mingling with all our lucky nominees.

And you’ll be able to watch the event too, on Channel 4 and All 4 at 6.30pm this coming Sunday.

Mr Sunak took to the red carpet wearing a sharp, dark suit and blue tie.

There he met two health heroes – midwife Laura Mackie and nurse Doreen Robinson.

Ms Mackie set up Basingstoke Hospital's Butterfly Suite, a special unit designed for parents whose babies are stillborn or die shortly after birth.

The mum-of-four from Thatcham, Berks, qualified as a midwife in 2003 and became a bereavement midwife six years ago.

She said: “Receiving news that your baby has died after carrying it for many months is devastating.

“As a bereavement midwife you can't change what happened but you can have an impact and make a difference to the care the family receives when they come in to deliver the baby, and in the weeks and months afterwards."

Ms Robinson was just 14 when she started volunteering at her local hospital.

Now 71, she is still working and gets up at 4.45am for the long drive to her job as a Sister at Solihull Hospital in the West Midlands.

And despite her two hip operations, one knee operation and seeing the NHS change dramatically over her 54 years of service, Doreen shows no signs of slowing down – and still works a 30-hour week.

The mum-of-two from Tamworth, Staffs, has seen many changes during her career – and once met Princess Diana when the late Royal visited Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham in 2013, where Doreen was working at the time.

She said: “Although the NHS is a different world now, the respect I have for my patients and staff never changes.

“I’ve always believed that the colour of the uniform doesn’t matter, as long as we work as a team.”

The PM was joined at the Who Cares Wins Awards by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, Health Secretary Stephen Barclay and Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan.

Sun doctor Zoe Williams was one of the award judges, alongside Claudia Winkleman, Christine Lampard, Tyrone Mings, Adam Kay, Penny Lancaster, Sun editor Victoria Newton and Ellie Orton, CEO of NHS Charities Together.

Dr Zoe said: "It’s been an absolute pleasure to be a judge this year but it definitely hasn’t been easy.

"Of the thousands of entries that came in, every single one was an amazing story of people going above and beyond to help others.

"While some were filled with hope, others were tough to read and heartbreaking — I’m not the only judge who choked up on more than one occasion.

"From the selfless young carer who saved her mum’s life, to the fearless midwife dodging bombs in Ukraine to look after expectant mothers, this year’s nominees are all winners and heroes."

Dr Zoe added: "These awards are about much more than just one night.
