Royals go nude – how Coronation guests stick to protocol with glossy neutral nails

The Coronation guest outfits might have been giving us some major spring-worthy colours, but there was one beauty detail noticeably absent from their outfits; nail varnish.

It seems the guests stuck to the infamous royal protocol regarding nail varnish colour, as they ditched bold colours or intricate designs in favour of glossy, neutral shades that didn’t distract from their chic Royal-worthy outfits.

It’s long been an unwritten rule that Royal women avoid colourful nail varnish whenever it comes to official engagements or occasions, with the late Queen Elizabeth leading by example and never being spotted wearing anything other than a delicate nude shade, with her favourite being Ballet Slippers from high street brand Essie.

Other members of the Royal family have followed suit, with Kate Middleton usually opting to wear nothing at all on her nails, although she has been known to occasionally wear a dark red shade when not attending royal engagements.

It seems the Coronation’s guests chose to follow in Queen Elizabeth’s footsteps, ditching colour in favour of delicate nudes or completely bare nails as they arrived for the ceremony, or else choosing to wear gloves to hide their hands completely.

Finnegan Biden, the granddaughter of US President Joe Biden, arrived with First Lady Jill Biden for the Coronation wearing a pastel yellow satin dress and carrying a white handbag, but she kept her manicure to a minimum, with a subtle glossy sheen that matched her skin tone perfectly.

Emma Thompson also kept her nails bare, choosing to forgo nail polish of any kind as she teamed her completely natural nails with a vibrant red floral coat and a red lip. Akshata Murty, wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, also played it safe with a completely bare nail, although her nails were still carefully shaped for the occasion.

Princess Charlene of Monaco was another guest who stuck to the nude nail colour theme, matching her blush pink skirt suit with a nude, glossy nail. Not everyone stuck to the traditional Royal protocol though; actress Joanna Lumley, who is a close friend of the King and Queen, braved a bold red colour that complimented her red lipstick and vintage-inspired outfit, although she later donned elbow length white gloves for the ceremony.

Former Prime Minister Theresa May also went for a bright red shade, although she kept her outfit more minimalist with a white coat and nude clutchbag, adding a pop of colour with her nails, red lipstick, and orange hat.
