Sarah Silverman is under fire for roasting Britney Spears at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.
A clip of the comedian’s monologue began recirculating online following the release of the “Framing Britney Spears” documentary, which highlighted how the public has been insensitive to Spears’ mental health struggles.
“um @SarahKSilverman girl what is this explain yourself x,” a user named said of the clip that went viral, with another fan writing in the post, “The media was so disgusting. WE ARE SORRY BRITNEY.”
In the VMAs segment, Silverman joked that Spears was “25 years old and she’s already accomplished everything that she is going to accomplish in her life. It’s mind-blowing.”
Guests like Maroon 5’s Adam Levine can be seen laughing along in the clip.
Silverman then went after Spears’ parenting, saying, “She’s a mother. It’s weird to think that just a few years ago on this very show, she was this sweet, innocent little girl in slutty clothes riding around with a python.”
The comedian added amid a few roars in the crowd, “Have you seen Britney’s kids? They are the most adorable mistakes you will ever see.”
Silverman delivered the standup right after Spears’ comeback performance, following her infamous meltdown, in which she shaved her head.
On Sunday, the former “I Love You, America” star explained that she was “known” for roasts at the time and that “MTV asked me to mini-roast Britney after her big performance.”
“While she was performing I was having diarrhea & going over my jokes,” she added in the tweet. “Had no idea she didn’t kill. Unfortunate. Art changes over yrs as we know more & the world changes.”
Silverman then said in a separate tweet, “I wish I could delete it,” and questioned why the fan reposted it, adding, “So r u trying to be kind or right?”
Another fan said in response, “We are trying to raise awareness of how the public and media treated her and contributed to her public image. YOU were a part of that and we want you to apologize. Don’t blame it on anyone else. You spoke the words, did you not?”
Amid the release of the “Framing Britney Spears” documentary, several others have been called out for their mistreatment of Spears over the years, including her ex, Justin Timberlake, and Diane Sawyer.
