A curious sea lion has been pictured getting up close and personal with Queen Sofia of Spain during her visit to Madrid Zoo Aquarium.
Queen Letizia’s mother-in-law, 84, was photographed leaning over the wooden fencing of the creature’s home to pet the marine mammal and offer it some attention.
The sea lion seemed equally eager to meet the royal, who is the wife of the former King of Spain, Juan Carlos I. He abdicated in favour of his son King Felipe VI of Spain in 2014.
Leaning its face close to Sofia’s, the cheeky creature appeared to almost try and give the royal a peck on the cheek during their interaction at the zoo.
Dressed in a smart blue patterned blazer and black trousers, the grandmother appeared to be in great spirits upon her visit to the site in order to mark World Oceans Day.

The international day takes place annually on 8 June and aims to inform the public about the impact human actions have on the ocean.
Last month, Queen Sofia joined the Spanish Royal Family as they put on a glamorous display at Princess Sofia’s Confirmation ceremony in Madrid by opting for outfits in varying shades of pink.
Princess Sofia, 16, proved she’s a fashion force in the making as she dazzled in a fuchsia jumpsuit for the religious ceremony.
The European royal opted for a show-stopping hot pink outfit to attend the ceremony at the Church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora in Madrid.
Queen Letizia and King Felipe’s youngest daughter chose a wide-legged one-piece for her big day.
The vibrant sleeveless jumpsuit featured a small cut-out right above the waist and had an elegant criss-cross top.
The stunning young royal completed her ensemble with a pair of nude Mary Jane-style flats and a light pink clutch bag with gold studs.
Sofia styled her long brown hair in loose waves and opted for minimal makeup for the religious service. Along with a few coats of mascara, Sofia added a sweep of rosy pink lipstick.

Meanwhile, Queen Letizia, 50, looked every inch the proud parent for her daughter’s Confirmation.
Matching with her youngest daughter, the mother-of-two donned a chic light pink crepe top with voluminous sleeves.
She then tucked this into some white culottes and finished off her outfit with some matching espadrille wedges.
Oozing effortless glamour, Letizia was pictured with a brown smokey eye and a nude lip.
The Queen completed her sophisticated look with some gold dangly earrings and a white leather handbag with a gold chain.
What’s more, Letizia’s mother-in-law Sofia also appeared to get the fashion memo as she opted for a pretty light pink blazer with an intricate floral pattern.
Meanwhile, Letizia’s eldest daughter Princess Leonor, 17, wore a sophisticated red floral dress with blue suede espadrilles.
Tying into the dress code, Letizia’s mother Paloma Rocasolano, 71, looked elegant in a salmon tweed jacket and skirt which she paired with a grey velvet clutch.
King Felipe, 55, looked dapper in a dark grey suit while Letizia’s father Jesus Ortiz was suitably smart in a navy style.
Following the ceremony, Letizia, Paloma and her mother-in-law Sofia walked out of the church arm-in-arm.
