Shaquille O’Neal pledged on Monday night to help New York City recover from the COVID catastrophe.

At a virtual fundraiser for mayoral hopeful and former Citigroup exec Ray McGuire, Shaq said, “Ray has always been a mentor to me … I want to help [him] and help New York City … New York has always been in charge. When New York is on fire, the world is on fire.”

O’Neal appeared with sports legends Tiki Barber, Patrick Ewing, former WNBA star Kym Hampton, and former tennis pro Katrina Adams to grill McGuire about his comeback plans for the city.

“I’ve never gotten into politics. This is the first year I got into politics … Whatever you need me to do, I’m there … I wouldn’t mind seeing a Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley Park, or a Charles Oakley Boulevard,” he said of the former New York Knicks players.

Meanwhile, Barber shared his serious hair envy for Oakley, who appeared on screen with a full silver afro.

“Oak, I am so jealous of your head man; I wish I had hair. It’s been gone for 20 years,” the former New York Giants said. “Me too. Shaq, you too. We’re all envious, Oak,” bald McGuire responded.

On a more serious note, McGuire answered questions about his economic plans for the city and how to address safety, justice and education.

“We need the leadership to meet the moment. We need somebody who can lead, somebody who can manage … because this city is divided and it’s broken, we need somebody who can pull this city together,” he said.
