The fashion sketch behind one of Princess Diana’s most famous evening gowns is expected to fetch thousands at auction this week.

Designed by Victor Edelstein, the dress was first worn by the Princess of Wales to the premier of Dangerous Liaisons at Leister Square in March 1989.

Princess Diana stunned crowds as she arrived in the strapless evening gown, which was made from opulent silk velvet.

A sketch of the ‘Dangerous Liaisons’  black velvet evening gown designed for Diana by British designer Victor Edelstein is to be auctioned

Diana wore the elegant number at the film premiere in March 1989

Accessorised with three diamante buttons down the front of the dress and a pair of diamond earrings, the piece perfectly managed to be dramatic yet elegant at the same time.

Diana liked the dress so much that it made three further appearances.

She wore it two other film premiers, Postcards from the Edge in January 1991 and 1492: Conquest of Paradise in October 1992 .

Soon afterwards, she would separate from Charles after 11 years of marriage.

Diana also wore the strapless column dress on the cover of Life Magazine, published after her death in August 1997.

It is thought that photo shoot was one of the last official portraits ever taken.

Edelstein’s sketch of the dress was completed in gouache, a kind of thick water colour.

It is signed bottom left by Edelstein, who also wrote, ‘Black silk velvet dress with diamante buttons and grosgrain edging.’

On Thursday, July 27, US-based auction house Nate D. Sanders Auctions will be offering the exclusive sketch to bidders through their online sale.

It is believed that this is the first time it has emerged on the market.

The bidding for the item is set to begin at $8,000 (£6,201) and will eventually go to the highest offer.

Diana stunned the waiting crowds as she arrived in the statement strapless evening gown

She wore the dress again on a number of occasions, including the premiere for the film Postcards From the Edge in January 1991

Edelstein designed dresses for the princess for more than a decade, offering his stylist expertise from 1982 to 1993.

A purple Edelstein dress belonging to Diana sold for more than £465,000 (more than $600,000)earlier this year, a record.

And while a sketch is unlikely to command anything like that price, it is expected to generate considerable interest all the same.

The British designer became one of the key shapers of Diana’s wardrobe, having designed the famous midnight blue dress she wore to waltz with John Travolta at the White House in 1985.

Edelstein also designed the aubergine tulip-shaped dress worn during an official 1991 portrait with Prince Charles.
