Smooth FM’s “feel good” promise appears to be paying off for the network, with the station posting a noticeable rise in its audience share in the sixth radio survey of the year.
The network registered increases in every market across the day, with significant bumps in the Breakfast and Afternoon slots, both up 1.4 percentage points. The largest win came for Ty Frost in the Mornings, with a big rise taking Smooth to a 12.7 per cent share.
In the drive slot, SmoothFM’s Bryan Webb overtook KIIS FM’s Will and Woody and WSFM’s Steve Fitton, topping the rankings with a share of 10.5 per cent. The sixth radio ratings survey for 2022 was measured between July 10 and September 17.
Ty Frost hosts Smooth Fm’s Morning show weekdays from 9am-1pm.
The results saw Smooth increase its total audience share to 10.9 per cent, up 1.2 percentage points, leapfrogging KIIS FM (9.5 per cent) to become Sydney’s second most listened-to radio station.
Meanwhile, 2GB retained its position as the number one station in Sydney across the week, despite dropping 0.8 percentage points for a 12.8 per cent overall share. Ben Fordham remains Sydney breakfast listeners’ broadcaster of choice, maintaining the top spot with a share of 16.9 per cent (down 0.2 points from the previous survey).
“Sydney has once again chosen 2GB as its number one radio station and preferred source of news, sport, traffic and entertainment,” said the station’s content manager Luke Davis.
Despite remaining on top, 2GB did see small losses in every slot. Most notably, Mornings with Ray Hadley was down 1.6 percentage points to 15.6 and Afternoons with Deborah Knight was down 0.9 points to 8.4 per cent total share.
The sixth survey also saw another mixed bag for ABC and the national youth broadcaster. Triple J continued to rebuild its audience in the key 18-24 demographic, adding another 4.8 percentage points for a 14.4 share. However, losses in other demographics meant Triple J posted a dip in the Breakfast and Morning slots.
Breakfast with Ebony Boadu and Bryce Mills fell 0.9 percentage points to 2.8 per cent, while Mornings with Lucy Smith fell 1.7 percentage points to 3.7 per cent.

ABC Sydney improved its total audience share to 8.7 per cent (up 0.7 percentage points) but failed to crack the top three stations in Sydney, tailing behind 2GB, Smooth and KIIS. The network did perform strongly in the Breakfast slot, with James Valentine coming third (10.1 per cent) behind Fordham and Kyle & Jackie O on KIIS (12.8).
