Tess Montgomery is a wardrobe expert and self-proclaimed “fashion hacker” who focuses on “curating a timeless sustainable capsule wardrobe⁣⁣⁣⁣”. The fashion expert, who has a huge 312K followers on her Instagram account @tessmontgomery, divulged her top style tips for women over 40 and 50.

She told Express.co.uk: “One of the big perks of getting older is that we with time tend to get more comfortable in our own skin. By our 40s and 50s, we know who we are and what we like. So my top style tip is to completely ignore trends and instead really figure out your personal style.

“What do you feel amazing wearing? What kind of items are you drawn to? What do your favorite pieces in your wardrobe have in common? Get more of those!”

There are certain timeless pieces that look chic on anyone and can stand any wardrobe in good stead to look chic and classic for many years to come. But, what are they, and do you need to invest large sums to enjoy them?

“Timeless items that are comfortable, stylish, and fit really well,” the fashion expert advised. “Focus on less, but better, and invest in timeless pieces that really are going to last. Now is the time to get that classic Chanel bag, Burberry trench coat, or any other item you have had on your wishlist for a while.”

The Chanel Bag

A Chanel bag, while an extravagant luxury, never seems to go out of style. The famous Chanel 2.55 was designed by the founder of the French label – now a global fashion giant – Coco Chanel. It came out of the designer’s frustration at carrying her handbag in her arms. So, she adopted the design of military bags, adding shoulder straps to the ladies’ bag.

The rest, as they say, is history. Now the instantly recognisable design is seen around the world. In fact, the bags are so widespread the brand was forced to put a limit on how many a customer could purchase each year in a bit to maintain the air of exclusivity.

Invest in the brand’s classic styles, such as the 2.55 handbag in black or other neutrals, to get the most wear out of them. If you don’t have a spare £8,000, why not treat yourself to one of these similar – and much cheaper – classic flap bags with a touch of Chanel about them?

The Trench Coat

Another military-inspired garment, the trench coat was created for British Army officers. It has become synonymous with British style and a suave cool, having been a style preferred by Humphrey Bogart.

Burberry is generally considered to be the gold standard in trench coats. Classic women’s trench coats from the brand start at £950 for the Detachable Hood Taffeta Kensington Trench Coat.  However, affordable versions of the timeless design are available, such as this ASOS trench coat on sale for £46. or this Longline Trench Coat from M&S, also on sale at £60.

But clothes are not all you can use to look younger and fresher. Makeup can help you feel your best too.

Makeup artist Pauline Briscoe shared the three things every woman over 50 needs in her makeup bag. The MUA has worked in the makeup industry for over 20 years.

Her work has appeared in editorials such as Vogue, Glamour, The Sunday Times Style magazine, ES magazine, and Fabulous magazine to name but a few.
