Supermarkets recall savoury snack over salmonella fears

SUPERMARKETS are recalling packs of pork scratchings over fears they could cause serious food poisoning.

Snack maker Snaffling Pig urged customers not to eat its Perfectly Salted Pork Scratchings as they could be contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious food poisoning, with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and a fever.

Supermarkets including Tesco and Morrisons stock Snaffling Pig products, but it's not clear which stores sold the contaminated pork scratchings.

The affected batch is sold in 45g bags and has a best before date of June 11, 2022.

No other items are affected by the contamination, Snaffling Pig said.

Shoppers should return the product to the store where they bought them to get a full refund.

You don't need a receipt to get your money back.

The company said: "All Snaffling Pig products undergo rigorous quality and food safety inspections as part of our manufacturing process.

"We can confirm that no other Snaffling Products are impacted by this recall and would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience that this has caused".

A rogue batch of pork scratchings put at least a dozen people in hospital with salmonella in August last year.

Hundreds of people fell ill after eating the Mr Porky products and 12 were hospitalised.

Supermarkets had to recall 18 pastry items last month after they were contaminated with the bacteria.

Traces of salmonella were found in some Lidl Christmas treats in December, forcing the supermarket to issue an urgent recall.
