Boiling the kettle is a lot cheaper than using a barista-style coffee maker – but three million machines have been sold in lockdown and energy bills are steaming as a result. Sarah Broomfield, energy expert at Uswitch.com, said: “The last year has made it harder to get a good coffee, so millions of us have been investing in increasingly elaborate machines to enjoy our caffeine fix. But gadgets can use a lot of energy.”

More than 16 million households have a coffee machine – some grind the beans, brew and steam milk to produce cafe-style fare. Yet the cost of a latte per day for a year is said to be £3.42, while tea is £2.56.

Making instant uses the same energy as a cup of tea, while filter or drip machines use 18 percent less, according to Uswitch.com’s research.

Pod-based gadgets like Nespresso use only two percent more energy than a cuppa.

Despite the home barista trend, the UK still spends £1billion a year boiling kettles for tea.

But take care not to overfill it – £68million a year is estimated to be wasted by boiling more than needed.
