How to prove you’re posh! Tatler reveals the modern status symbols for 2022 including British sparkling wine, a blue tick, Ottolenghi spices and a Tate mural
- Tatler has shared a list of items and that will ‘elevate your social status’
- Society bible recommends serving British Sparkling Wine and Ottolenghi spices
- Adds houses should have rewilded grounds and feature an ornamental lake
Tatler has released a list of the modern symbols that will help prove you’re post and signify your status in well-heeled circles.
Explaining that ‘in 2022 a set of unlikely social indicators have arisen’ the Society Bible explains that if you ‘witness, decipher, even smell any of the below’ you’re in good company.
Among the unusual items included a rewilded estate with an ornamental lake as well as a Tate mural in the home and a haute couture nursery for the little ones.
House plants and a wine cellar completed the interior must-haves, while if you’re hosting guests you must have a bottle of English Sparkling Wine and Ottolenghi spices.
Meanwhile, a blue tick on social media will show you’re good company and any pet must be a rare breed of dog.
British sparkling wine
Gone are the days of French only wine being served at aristocratic dinner parties and society events.
Thanks to geology mapping, which has changed the condition of soil in Britain over the years, the grapes that are grown for English sparkling wine are now the same as those produced in the Champagne region of France.
British sparkling wine is now a prominent fixture at many well-heeled events, despite, as Tatler says it being the ‘furthest thing from a status symbol you could get’ when it first came on the scene’.
Tatler says: ‘Fast-forward to now, and with brands like Nyetimber, Hattingley Valley and Coates and Seeley in the mix – it’s thought to be a truly indulgent British delicacy in social circles.
‘With news that the French Champagne House Taittinger IS creating a state-of-the-art wine-making facility in Kent only cementing that line of thinking’.
Post cupboard essentials include British Sparkling Wine (left) and Ottolenghi spices (right)
Ottolenghi spices in your cupboard
Palestinian za’atar, Aleppo chili flakes, dukkah and ground dried lime are the the hallmarks of the modern store cupboard, according to the society bible.
But these are the standard ones you can pick up in Tesco, they must be ordered from Yotam Ottolenghi – the cult chef with dozens of top selling books and busy restaurants in London.
An ornamental lake
The only way to truly cultivate the English country idyll, Tatler say, is with an ornamental lake which has become a feature in the homes of the Beckhams and the Sheerans.
The magazine suggests channelling the strategically designed parkland of British palaces Blenheim, Harewood and Stowe.

A rewilded estate
A rewilded farm has become the ultimate status symbol, Tatler say, with gentleman farmers including Viscount and Viscountess Hinchingbrooke at Mapperton House in Dorset, Anself Guise – once dubbed the ‘hedonistic heir’ – at Elmore Court and Mandy Lieu, the Malaysian-American model, actress and owner of Ewhurst Park in Hampshire.

A Tate Mural
While rewilded estates and ornamental lakes are essential outside, the inside of the property needs a Tate Mural to prove you’re posh.
Wallpaper supplier Graham and Brown have launched an exclusive collection with the Tate with more than thirty, fully customisable wall murals on offer.
Tatler says: ‘Imagine having an angular, geometric wall mural by Piet Mondrian in your home or The Renaissance of Venus by Walter Crane as a backdrop to your bathroom. Guests may never want to leave – your house will be a living and breathing museum (only topped by the original works of course).’

A blue (verified) tick
‘Genuinely, very important,’ and ‘one of the most coveted symbols in the social world,’ according to Tatler.
A haute nursery
Haute couture isn’t only for dress, it’s needed for your nursery too.
Why? ‘Because chic babies deserve what’s best’ the society bible says.
To complement your Tate Mural, get your baby a bespoke mural filled with animals by the ‘extremely talented’ Rebecca Campbell while they also need a Moses baskets upholstered in Liberty prints and ‘the most adorable embellished floral bunny headbands by Marie Chantal.’

House plants
Plants are the new pets.
Tatler say house plants are essential for a posh household, and ‘not a vase of naff tulips or yellow roses from Sainsburys’ but instead a ‘seasonal, leafy, oxygen-emitting bonsai or towering philodendrons that speak volumes’.
The rarer, the better, of course.

Tatler says: ‘Think Japanese succulents or Dracaena fragrans – and it’s not the low-key minimal attention plants, it’s the ones that demand time, frequent watering and a sought-after sunny spot by the window.
‘The owner in question will very likely look after said plants as if they were their offspring. When they go away or on holiday, you will get a phone call – ‘might you be free for a spot of plant sitting?’ – always accept.’
A Grayson Perry
‘A Grayson Perry ceramic vessel or one of his plates adorning your wall is an automatic status-elevator – especially if it’s been awarded as a personal gift,’ Tatler says.
The artist has been known to give his nearest and dearest ceramics with their faces etched into the clay – which is sure to impress guests.
A wine cellar
Chin, chin! Tatler has released a tongue-in-cheek list of the modern symbols that signify status among high society – and a wine cellar stocked with ‘port and vintage wines’ is a must
A clear indicator that separates the upper rungs of society from the masses is possessing a wine cellar, according to the publication.
Bottles of vintage wines and champagnes, as well as port ‘gifted by the godparents should be at the ready for thirsty guests.
Tatler says: ‘To be free to pluck a wine to match the occasion – rather than resorting to simply what’s available – is a serious status marker’.
Rare breeds of dog
Woof, woof! Walking a whippet dog is sure to get you a plethora of friends and boyfriends, according to the publication – who advise that ‘the leggier the dog, the better’
According to the publication your status elevates ‘beyond all measure’ if you take a trot around London’s Green Park with a rare breed of dog by your side.
Women are promised ‘new friends and boyfriends’ with the addition of a furry friend by her side – so a trip to Battersea Dog & Cats Home may be due.
Tatler says: ‘The leggier the dog, the higher the status – think whippets and greyhounds’.
A fountain pen
Yours faithfully! The society bible recommends you buy a fountain pen – preferably engraved with your initials – to RSVP to invites, adding that it has a ‘whiff of a public school’
The reliable old biro is said to be frowned upon in the more exclusive circles.
Instead, a fountain pen – preferably engraved with engraved with your initials, is the way forward for would-be socialites.
Tatler says: ‘Thank you letters, lunch invitations and RSVPs can be scribed with one of these and the message is loud, clear and respectful – it has a whiff of a public school when hours would be set aside for ‘letter writing’.’
Homemade sloe gin
Sante! Described as a ‘status assertion’, the offer of a homemade sloe gin apparently sends out the message that you have a ‘wealth of time’ on your hands
As working is presumably an activity bestowed on the less fortunate, handmade gin is said to be a signifier of status.
Described as a ‘status assertion’, the offer of a customised tipple apparently sends out the message that you have a ‘wealth of time’ on your hands.
Tater says: ‘The time-poor will not have flagons of sloe gin lining their cupboards – it would far more likely be shop bought.’
