Taylor Swift got a jump on Easter by putting her Easter eggs out on Good Friday. One week out from the release of “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” her re-recording of the 2008 album “Fearless,” the singer has issued the titles of the bonus songs that are being appended to the original track list, though she made fans work for it, just a little.
“The vault door is about to be as unhinged as you’ll think I am after you watch this video,” she wrote in a social media post. “Level: Expert. Happy decoding!”
The level of clues was not nearly expert enough to keep hardcore Swifties from quickly sussing out what she was up to in the 30-second clip, which included a previously unheard song playing backward while words scrambled into anagrams came and went on-screen.
One song has already been released — “You All Over Me,” featuring Maren Morris — so “EMNRA,” for instance, was not much of a puzzle (and it was not Swift signaling that she is a secret NRA member who loves em-dashes).
Keith Urban was apparently revealed as the other duet partner joining Morris among the bonus tracks, which are six previously unreleased songs that were written during the “Fearless” era and, like the existing ones from that album, have been newly recorded for this Big Machine-skirting project.
The other five track names, according to swiftly decoding fans: “We Were Happy,” “Don’t You,” “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” “Bye Bye Baby” and “That’s When.”
Backward masking-savvy Swift fans also played the 30-second snippet in reverse to pick up these lyrics: “‘I ran into you somewhere / I didn’t mean to stare / I hope she’s never like me / I’m sure she’ll make you happy.”
Swift reps declined to confirm the fan decoding, although it’s expected that there will be a front-ways announcement of the titles, too, prior to the album coming out April 9.
