If you’re a fan of high-stakes and high-drama telenovelas like “El Señor de los Cielos,” “La Reina del Sur,” “El Recluso,” “Dime Quien Soy” and “Mariposa de Barrio,” we’ve got good news: NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises has launched a groundbreaking effort with over 35 original premium scripted content projects in the mix. Telemundo Streaming Studios represents the media conglomerate’s largest investment focused on Spanish-language production and development capabilities for Latino streaming audiences.
“As the premier media company serving Hispanics in the U.S., Telemundo is shaping a new era in Hispanic media with the creation of the first-of-its-kind streaming studio,” said Beau Ferrari, chairman, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, in a statement. “Latinos are pacesetters of cultural and technological change. We are the leading Hispanic media company super-serving the Latinos of today with the best original, premium and culturally relevant content across all platforms.”
In addition to beefing up its intellectual property, the new Miami-based studio will offer production services to direct-to-consumer platforms in search of high-quality production expertise and capabilities. Telemundo Streaming Services will be housed under Telemundo Global Studios, led by its president Marcos Santana. Santana will continue to oversee all original scripted productions for Telemundo and its other platforms, including international collaborations.
“We are thrilled to open a new state-of-the-art studio designed from its inception to produce premium content featuring world-class producers and award-winning Hispanic talent across the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Spain and Argentina,” added Santana.
According to Nielsen’s analytics, Hispanics are on the leading edge of streaming adoption— four out of five Hispanics have access to streaming services at home today. Moreover, Hispanics also spend more time per day on video through TV_connected decides and video-focused app usage in comparison to adults as a whole. Hispanics also show up for stories that represent them and their stories, comprising half or more of the average audience for these Latino series.
Some Telemundo Streaming Studios projects underway include the dramedy “Armas de Mujer” for Peacock and “El Marginal’s” fourth and fifth seasons for Netflix, as well as the remake of “Historia de un Clan,” upcoming seasons of “El Recluso,” a new version of “El Diario de un Gigolo” and action/thriller “El Immortal.” Last July, Telemundo launched over 3,000 hours of streaming content on NBCUniversal streamer Peacock.
