Tesco introduced Clubcard Price to encourage shoppers to sign up for their loyalty card. Clubcard members then get exclusive deals in-store and online across many products, saving them hundreds of pounds across the year. But, one customer has urged others to look a little closer at the price tag of certain items, because they might not be cheaper than other brands of the same product.

Kimberley Mallen posted on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Grouptesco a photo of two toilet roll products from different brands on a shelf in her local Tesco.

Andrex Supreme Quilts 16 Toilet rolls are being sold for £10.40, but if you’re a Clubcard member, the special Clubcard Price is £8.50.

Velvet Classic Quilted 24 Toilet rolls are also being sold for £8.50 – without a special Clubcard Price.

Kimberly pointed out: “Don’t let the clubcard prices catch you out!”

“Medium chicken clubcard £3. Look at the weight range. It goes up to 1.5kg.

“Large chicken starts at 1.5kg for £4.50 so you could potentially end up getting the same size chicken for more money.

“I always look for the biggest weight in whichever category depending on how many people I’m feeding. We always use the breast for Roast and the rest for curry next day.”

She then proceeded to tell other shoppers to check the quantity and quality of the products, especially when they are the same price, as you can get more for your money depending on which one you buy.

“Andrex 16 rolls x 155 sheets = 2480.

“Velvet 24 rolls x 150 sheets = 3600.

“Just because it’s on the Clubcard price doesn’t mean it works out better,” she added.

The post gained a lot of attention, with many sharing their own advice.

Gemma Louise Snedden said: “I’ve always checked the cost per sheet or roll, or wherever when buying as its stated on ticket. Same with any other product. Cost per weight, volume etc. No Clubcard price ain’t always the better deal, just look at the shelf pricing n make buying choices accordingly. Good post to let people be more aware when shopping.” [SIC].

Jo Mac suggested: “Well no coz if you shop around online you would of already noticed the Clubcard price is the normal price in some other stores!” [SIC].

Susanne Hawksby argued: “You can’t compare though. If it had been two Andrex products one on Clubcard then yes I’d agree but your comparing two different brands that are generally two different prices just one is cheaper than usual. If you went by this theory nobody would ever buy Andrex. (I don’t as it’s expensive and don’t rate it) and there’s fare cheaper options than either of these to.”

Megan Stafford chimed: “They’re different brands of course they’re different prices?”

Amanda Shadbold said: “Not a comparison though as one is Andrex and one is velvet nothing to do with Clubcard. Andrex is on offer in Tesco simples.

“One is classic quilt one is supreme quilt. Andrex is usually priced a little higher than velvet.”

Another Tesco customer, Hayley Lanciano shared her top tip for buying whole chickens.

Alongside a photograph of a medium and large chicken on a shelf, she asked members of the same Facebook group: “Is it just me that checks the weight of chicken?

“Medium chicken clubcard £3. Look at the weight range. It goes up to 1.5kg.

“Large chicken starts at 1.5kg for £4.50 so you could potentially end up getting the same size chicken for more money.

“I always look for the biggest weight in whichever category depending on how many people I’m feeding. We always use the breast for Roast and the rest for curry next day.”
