'The Bachelorette': Why Katie Thurston Needs to Ignore Her Top Choices on Night 1

Katie Thurston’s journey to find love starts tonight on The Bachelorette. Unlike The Bachelor, several women on The Bachelorette have had luck finding lasting love in the past. Now, one former Bachelorette is giving Thurston some solid advice for how to start her season off on the right foot, and that’s to ignore the frontrunners.

Why Katie should ignore her frontrunners on ‘The Bachelorette’

In the real world, when a person likes someone, they typically try to spend as much time with them as possible. In the Bachelor mansion, doing the opposite may be helpful.

“I give the same advice to every Bachelor or Bachelorette. If they ask for it, I always say the same thing. I say, ‘Figure out who you like right away, like, day one and ignore them,’” former Bachelorette Ali Fedotowsky told Us Weekly. “And you need someone in the moment telling you that so it’s probably good if Tayshia (Adams) and Kaitlyn (Bristowe) were there, hopefully, to give her this advice in the moment. But, like, ignore them because they’re going to be there two or three [weeks] later.”

If a lead knows they like someone, they can afford to spend their time getting to know the other men to make sure they give everyone a fair shot.

“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket ’cause that’s what I did,” Fedotowsky said. “I put all my eggs in two baskets on my season. And in the end, I feel like that really hurt me because I wasn’t able to really get to know some of the other guys that maybe if I had given it a little bit of time, something could have happened, but I sent them home because I was so laser-focused on my top two.”

Producers have a hand in choosing dates and who goes home

Over the years, multiple leads have said that producers of the show have a heavy hand in who gets to go on dates and even how long the lead has to keep certain people around. Fedotowsky, who knew her top two from the very beginning, once said that she was forced to keep men around who she had no interest in.

“I got into a full-on screaming fight with my producer, saying, ‘I’m not giving him a rose! This is too cheesy, this is not happening!’ And she was like, ‘You have to give him a chance.’ I’m like, ‘I’m not going to give him a chance,’ and I walked off the show,” she once told Entertainment Tonight. “I said, ‘I’m done, I quit, I’m not going to be the Bachelorette anymore.’”

There has also been seasons where a person will give a contestant a first impression rose and then won’t take them on a date for weeks due to producer intervention. By keeping who her frontrunners are close to her chest, Thurston might up her chances of actually getting to take them on dates early on in the season. She’ll also have a better chance of choosing a guy who is really there for her rather than just one who caught her eye early on.
