A beauty expert has revealed the best makeup look for each decade – insisting that for a 20-year-old ‘less is more’, while those over 50 should opt for ‘defined eyeliner’.

Laura Kay, makeup expert and founder of Laura Kay London, told FEMAIL: ‘It is important to adopt your makeup and beauty regime with the passing of time to look and feel your best self.’

She added: ‘To look your best, you should follow a set of rules for makeup application, not only to look younger but also to compliment you gracefully depending on whether you are twenty or sixty.’

Here the British expert reveals the clever makeup tricks and techniques everyone can use to enhance their features depending on their age…

RULES FOR YOUR TWENTIES

With a youthful skin, in your 20s, you can go for either a dewy finish or a matte look with your foundation. But too much makeup can age you, so better keep things light

‘You might assume your 20s is the age you can be bold and experiment, but anything too heavy will age you prematurely,’ said the makeup artist.

‘In your 20s it is advisable to start a good daily skincare routine that will set you up for years to come.

‘In addition, always make sure you take off your makeup at the end of the day without fail which will put you in a good routine.’

Foundation: ‘Depending on your skin type in your 20s you could go for a dewy finish or more of a matte look, you could try Armani Luminous Silk for a nice glow and you could use Laura Mercier Translucent powder on top of this to set the foundation & give a matte appearance.’

Eyes & Brows: ‘In your 20s less is more, and it is all about a soft fluffy eyebrow, adding subtle definition. A good tip is to add liner inside the eye to make the eyes pop.

‘If you prefer a heavier makeup look, try, and keep this restricted to your eyes or brows only.’

Cheekbones: ‘In your 20s you will naturally have a fresh appearance but adding the highlights gives an even more youthful glow, which will compliment and flatter. A nice peach glow on your cheeks is the perfect colour to suit you at this age.’

‘Use a bronzer, such as Nars Illuminate to add contour to the cheekbones to give a fresh and healthy look.’

Lips: ‘A peachy gloss on your lips will exude a fresh glow, opt for a gloss or lip stain.’

RULES FOR YOUR THIRTIES

The 30s is when people see the first signs of ageing, Laura said. The skin begins to lose its elasticity, left. You can get great coverage while still opting for a dewy finish, right

‘This is when usually most people see their first signs of ageing,’ warned Laura.

‘Naturally, the ageing process results in losing elasticity in your skin, we become less supple, and our skin isn’t as “bright” as it once was. Therefore, in your 30s you should go for a bolder look to flatter and appear younger.’

Foundation: ‘For someone in their 30s, this being me, I opt for a CC cream, I love IT cosmetics it gives great coverage but looks natural still with a slightly dewy finish.’

Eyes & Brows: ‘Instead of using eyeliner, eye shadow can be used to accentuate the eyes perfectly. A good tip is to really blend the eye shadow in the socket line to create a look of a smoldering, bolder eye.’

Cheekbones: ‘You should look to add a lovely healthy glow to your cheekbones to capture a youthful look. A liquid bronze highlighter, such as Laura Kay London Illuminate in Bronze, can give you the perfect youthful glow, which is still natural.

‘To finish off the look, use a highlighter on the cheeks but you want to have a ‘matter t-zone’ so you don’t shine in the wrong places.

‘Good products to use include Mac Block Powder or Laura Mercier translucent powder. Use on the t-zone only that then keeps the shine on the cheekbones.’

Lips: ‘For your lips, opt for more of a glossy appearance with lip liner to add the definition, but it is key to use the gloss to blend in the lip liner, which will successfully help you achieve fuller lips.

‘You shouldn’t overlook this technique because in your 30s you may start to see your lips are not as defined as they once were, but this clever trick can make the lips appear plumper and more youthful.’

RULES FOR YOUR FORTIES

’40s is the new 30s – less is more especially around the eyes when it comes to concealer, as if you apply anything to heavy it can be quite ageing. You need to go for light textured products’, Laura said

’40s is the new 30s – less is more especially around the eyes when it comes to concealer, as if you apply anything to heavy it can be quite ageing. You need to go for light textured products.

SPF and skin care is everything, make sure you are using good quality products like Is Clinical & AlumierMD.’

Foundation: ‘Opt for a dewier base, for example Chanel Vitalumiere or Luminous Silk foundation by Armani Beauty are amazing products to use, especially if you are in your late 40s.’

Eyes & Brows: ‘In addition, go for a bolder fluffy brow to enhance the eyes so you draw your attention to this part of your face.

I wouldn’t liner the underneath of the eye on anyone in their late 40s, as you don’t want to close up the eye in anyway or for your eyes to look dull.

You want to achieve a fresh appearance with a youthful glow so you should focus on liner on the top of the eyelids and mascara or fake flashes, if needed.’

Cheekbones: ‘In your 40s you want to achieve a dewy glow and accentuate the highlight on the cheekbones to give a fresh ageless appearance.’

Lips: ‘It is crucial not to pick a light or beige toned lipstick in your 40s as this will make you look older than you are, instead opt for a brighter colour.

‘Pink lip tones work well as it will help lift but won’t look too over the top like bolder reds or deep shades could do.

‘Don’t go for dry lipstick formulas as they will draw attention to any fine lines, instead go for gloss or shimmering lip-glosses to give the illusion of plumpness.’

RULES FOR YOUR FIFTIES & BEYOND

From 50s onward is when you can really notice the sign of ageing. You can play around with eye makeup to help frame your eyes. A sheer peach of pink gloss lip will compliment your eyes

‘This is when we can really notice signs of ageing. Our collagen breaks down more and we have additional fine lines and wrinkles.

Our body hair can also start to thin out and this can be noticeable in our eyebrows, which may appear thinner and sparse in places.’

Foundation: ‘Firstly, in your 50s or 60s don’t think you have to slather on the makeup by any means. Embrace your age and don’t hide the signs of ageing. This will help achieve a complexion that is rich and youthful looking.

Light concealer should be used to lift any dark circles and a hydrating foundation applied all over to help smooth and soften your appearance.’

Eyes & brows: ‘For your brows, invest in a good brow kit to subtly groom your eyebrows. You can also invest in permanent makeup to add natural fine hair strokes to your brows to help define and lift your features. Brows can more defined and smoother but should still look natural.

‘In your 50s and 60s you can play around with eye makeup and a good trick is to have a lighter powdery application on your inner eye lid and then blended with a darker shade as you move outwards.

‘Really define the socket of your eyelid with a small pencil brush and blend in for a smooth but effect transition into the lighter colour.

‘Defined eyeliner also helps frame the area. Try and opt for natural eyelashes if you can as you have defined your eyes enough.’

Lips: ‘A sheer peach or pink gloss lip will compliment your eyes and use a sort lip liner pencil to help define the edges without looking noticeable.

‘Applying only a small amount of highlighter on the cheekbones and down the ridge of your nose to accentuate your features.’
