Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have introduced their daughter to the Queen via video call, a source has claimed.

The Duke, 36, and Duchess of Sussex, 39, welcomed Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor on Friday, June 4 at 11.40am at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California.

The couple are now preparing to start life as a family of four, as Lilibet joins their eldest son Archie who turned two last month.

A source told People magazine that the pair eagerly introduced Harry’s grandmother to her namesake during a video call.

The insider claimed: ‘They were very excited and couldn’t wait to share that their daughter arrived.’

Lilibet’s introduction to the Queen comes after royal experts claimed Harry and Meghan told the monarch they were considering naming their daughter after her – but didn’t ask for permission before her arrival.

The Queen’s family nickname Lilibet, was first used when she was unable to pronounce her own name properly as a toddler and her grandfather King George V would call her ‘Lilibet’ to imitate her attempts.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex explained in the announcement of their daughter’s birth that they had chosen the name as a tribute to the Queen, meanwhile the middle name Diana was given in honour of Harry’s late mother.

Nigel Cawthorne who is the author of Call Me Diana: The Princess of Wales on Herself, told FEMAIL it’s likely the couple are aiming for their daughter to meet the Queen in person.

Nigel said: ‘Meghan and Harry will be keeping a close eye on when the USA moves on to the UK’s green list to take Lili and her brother to Britain as soon as they can and visit the Queen and Prince Charles as soon as ordinary travel between California and England is restored.

‘It has been a long time that they have seen each other in a joyful context and no doubt both sides will keenly look forward to it’

Lilibet who is the Queen’s 11th great-grandchild, has arrived less than a month after Prince Harry criticised the monarch’s parenting. Pictured: Harry and Meghan with Archie

Lilibet is the Queen’s 11th great-grandchild. The newborn’s arrival has come less than a month since Harry reportedly upset the Queen by making ‘very personal’ criticisms of her and Prince Charles’s parenting skills.

He said in a podcast in the US that he and Prince William had been made to ‘suffer’ as children, suggesting his father thought: ‘Well, it was like that for me, so it’s going to be like that for you.’

However, Buckingham Palace released a statement to express the family’s happiness at Lilibet’s birth, joining the likes of celebrities and politicians.

The palace said: ‘The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.’

It was revealed today that Harry and Meghan will both be taking ‘several months off work’ to care for Lilibet with their eldest son Archie ‘excited’ and ‘very happy’ about the arrival of his younger sister.

Omid Scoobie, who is a journalist favoured by the couple, said the couple are ‘leading by example’ as they offer up to 20 weeks paternal leave at Archewell.

He told Good Morning America that he’s unsure how their tribute to the Queen may affect their relationship, saying: ‘I don’t know about an olive branch but it shows how close they’ve always been with the Queen.’

Omid took to social media to announce that Harry and Meghan won’t be ‘sharing a photograph at this time’ of Lili.

Sweet family nickname for Queen that inspired Harry and Meghan’s name for their baby daughter

Lilibet – the Queen’s family nickname – was first used when Princess Elizabeth was just a toddler and unable to pronounce her own name properly.

Her grandfather King George V would affectionately call her ‘Lilibet’ imitating her own attempts to say Elizabeth.

The sweet nickname stuck and she became Lilibet to her family from then on.

The Duke of Edinburgh also referred to his wife as Lilibet, writing to his mother in law after their wedding: ‘Lilibet is the only ‘thing’ in the world which is absolutely real to me.’

Harry and Meghan’s new baby daughter – the Queen’s 11th great-grandchild – will be known as Lili. A variation on Lily, the flower is often seen to symbolise purity, commitment, rebirth and fertility.

Lili’s middle name Diana honours Harry’s later mother Diana, Princess of Wales. It is no surprise the couple chose to pay tribute to Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997 when Harry was just 12.

Lili has been born almost a month before the princess would have celebrated her 60th birthday on July 1. Her cousin Princess Charlotte also has Diana as one of her middle names, as well as Elizabeth. She is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Harry and the Duke of Cambridge are due to unveil a statue of their mother at Kensington Palace on her birthday, but the arrangements have yet to be confirmed, amid a long-reported rift between the brothers.

The Sussexes’ tribute to the Queen is likely to be seen as an olive branch to the monarch and the rest of the family.

Harry and Meghan plunged the Windsors into crisis with their Oprah Winfrey interview in March when they accused an unnamed royal of making a racist remark about their son Archie’s skin tone before he was born.

They also said the institution failed to help Meghan when she was suicidal. But during the televised interview with Winfrey, the Sussexes lauded the Queen.

Harry spoke of his respect for his grandmother, while Meghan said: ‘The Queen… has always been wonderful to me.’
