The Queen wore a diamond floral brooch she received as a wedding gift for her first public engagement at Buckingham Palace since the death of her husband Prince Philip.

Last week, the monarch, 95, launched Commonwealth Games baton relay at her London residence ahead of the event in Birmingham 2022.

The royal donned an elegant orange coat with a matching hat featuring floral detailing for the event in the forecourt on Thursday.

She opted to wear the glittering rose brooch from Cartier for the event, which was given to her by the Nizam of Hyderabad on the occasion of her marriage to the Duke of Edinburgh in 1947.

It marked the Queen’s first major engagement at Buckingham Palace since Prince Philip’s death in April. She returned to her Berkshire home earlier this week following a summer in Balmoral.

Among the Queen’s many wedding presents were a stunning Cartier tiara and necklace from the Nizam of Hyderabad, an Indian monarch and one of the wealthiest jewellery collectors in the world.

The tiara, which cost £5,000 in 1947 (equivalent to £189,000 today), was set with 1,033 diamonds and had three detachable roseshaped brooches.

Oddly, despite his generosity, the Nizam was not invited to the wedding.

The Queen wore his gift several times over 25 years, including on this visit to the Norwegian Embassy in 1951, but had it broken up in 1973 and asked the then Crown jeweller Garrard to make a new tiara.

She still wears the matching necklace, which she loaned to the Duchess of Cambridge in 2014.

The royal poignantly wore the diamond floral brooch for her first public engagement since the funeral of her husband Prince Philip in April.

On Thursday, Her Majesty, who was joined by youngest son Prince Edward at the event, placed her message in the baton, before Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox set off to carry the symbol on the first leg of its journey.

The relay of 7,500 bearers will take the baton on a 90,000-mile journey to all 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth over 294 days.

The Queen has regularly worn the stunning necklace (left, circa 1953) and has even lent the piece to the Duchess of Cambridge (pictured right, in 2014)

The monarch’s message was automatically sealed in the ‘smart’ baton, enhanced with cutting-edge technology, and will be read at the opening ceremony of the Games in Birmingham on July 28 2022.

The Queen is patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation and was joined during the ceremony by the institution’s vice patron, the Earl of Wessex.

Representatives from the Commonwealth Games Federation, grassroots sports organisations from the West Midlands and athletes competing in the Games attended.

The Queen previously wore the diamond floral brooch for her first public engagement since the funeral of her husband Prince Philip in April

It was the first time the Queen had been seen since the news broke of her Dubai ruler friend being responsible for illegal UK phone hacking.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was able to snoop on the parliamentary emails of Tory peer and former royal lawyer Fiona Shackleton.

Earlier this week, it emerged Sheikh Mohammed also hacked the iPhone of Ms Shackleton’s client Princess Haya, his wife who fled to Britain in fear of her life and those of her staff.
