The Witcher' Season 3 Cast, Storyline, Filming Updates, and Possible New Characters

Netflix released The Witcher Season 2 in late December of 2021. The season furthered Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer’s journey while introducing new characters and storylines. The second season revealed Ciri’s true lineage and the identity of Emperor Emhyr. Fans are anticipating The Witcher Season 3 as showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has teased what is in store.

Here is everything fans need to know about the third season, from returning cast to rumored new characters.

What cast members will return for ‘The Witcher’ Season 3?

Every main character in The Witcher is on the brink of a bigger and more complex story that will lead into season three. Not only do fans learn Ciri’s powers are due to her Elder blood lineage, but they also learn the feared Emhyr is her father. Yennefer spent most of the second season without her magic but reclaimed it when sacrificing herself for Ciri. Geralt assumes a bigger role as Ciri’s protector and stand-in father.

Actors Freya Allen, Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Joel Batey have not said “yes” to being in the third season. Fans can rightfully assume the main cast will return for The Witcher Season 3. Batey praised the showrunner and said in an interview with Newsweek, “She’s a wonderful, wonderful leader, and captain of this ship. So yeah, without hesitation I would follow her to the ends of the Earth.”

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Cavill says he is “absolutely” on board with The Witcher’s seven-year plan. Fans can agree the Netflix series would not work without Allan and Chalotra, who will return to their respective roles.

The Witcher Season 2 also introduced new characters to explore in season three, like Philippa Eilhart, played by Cassie Clare. The next season will also likely bring back MyAnna Buring, Mimî M. Khayisa, Anna Shaffer, and more.

What will ‘The Witcher’ Season 3 be about?

Showrunner Lauren Hissrich told fans the fate of the series was up to Andrzej Sapkowski. She has often reported each season of the Netflix series would adapt a different book by Sapkowski. The Witcher Season 3’s storyline will follow the Time of Contempt book.

In an interview with The Wrap, “Season 3, for instance, takes place on a very, very small timeline. Not a lot of time passes, because it doesn’t need to,” said the showrunner. Hissrich explains many events in the second season helped set up the story for the third installment.

According to Polygon, Hissrich said, “I know that in season 3 we’re introducing the Scoia’tael, the army of elves that’s fighting on behalf of Nilfgaard.” The third season will also delve deeper into Emhyr/Duny’s story concerning Ciri. Hissrich also laid the groundwork to explore Wraiths of Mörhogg in The Witcher Season 3.

An official announcement has not been made, but ComicBook.com claims The Witcher Season 3 will begin filming in March. The third season has no official premiere date. Executive producer Steve Gaud teased on Instagram he and the team have already started scouting filming locations.

The Netflix series might cast new characters

To continue the storyline flow in The Witcher Season 3, the main characters and new season two characters need to be included. ComicBook.com reported, sourcing the Redanian Intelligence, a new fan-favorite character might be cast for the third season.

According to the Redanian Intelligence, Milva, also known as Maria Barring, might be introduced into the third season. Supposed casting notes about Milva say she will cross paths with Geralt at some point. She also has a razor-sharp wit and is good with a knife.

Fans should take the news of possible new characters with a grain of salt. There is no official confirmation about the character as the Redanian Intelligence also claims The Witcher Season 3 will also cast a character named The Professor.
