Try this simple communication technique to stay connected with your partner

Communication is key.

We know this, because the phrase is ubiquitous when it comes to relationship issues, be it with your friends, colleagues, family or a partner.

But, sometimes life takes over and, in the midst of it all, communication falls by the wayside.

Over time, this can lead to resentment, frustration and a sense of disconnect in the relationship – especially a romantic one.

‘When they’re feeling pressured, challenged or stressed, people will leak their truth all the time,’ senior therapist and relationship specialist Sally Baker tells Metro.co.uk.

‘These feelings and emotions might even come out in unhelpful ways because of just how someone is trying to mentally process what they’re coping with.

‘They might be short-tempered, for example, or they might be abrupt, or angry.’

When we only talk about our feelings in moments of frustration, arguments are quick to take precedence, rather than open and non-judgemental dialogue.

Luckily, there’s an antidote – a super simple, therapist-approved communication technique that won’t take up a chunk of your day.

The five-minute check-in

The five-minute check-in is, well, exactly that: five minutes of uninterrupted talking time each, once a day.

‘This allows adults a time and an opportunity to check in regularly, so that problems or challenges aren’t allowed to grow exponentially,’ explains Baker.
