Andreo Montanino, 33, bought the chunky 3½lb treasure in honour of his late gran, who was a devout Roman Catholic.

But now the senior buyer wants to sell the nine carat, 9 inch cross.

Andreo, of Trowell, Notts, said: “My nan believed items like this, Jesus on the cross, were sacred and should be treated with the utmost respect.

“I lost her about 18 months ago. She was in her 80s. As soon as I saw that cross, it reminded me of her.”

And he reckons bling-loving boxing champion Tyson, who is a devout Christian, would appreciate it.

He said: “It’s so special, it would work well if it was worn around the neck of a famous boxer on the walkout to the ring, someone like Tyson Fury.”

The hefty cross and chain will go under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers in Derby on September 22.
