Wagatha Christie: Coleen is defenceless and Rebekah is power dressing

The fashion verdict is in! Coleen Rooney is playing a defenceless woman of the people in high street get ups says celebrity stylist MIRANDA HOLDER – while Rebekah aims for Mary Poppins crossed with Kate Middleton

  • Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney libel trial has seen many fashion
  • Stylists like Miranda Holder believe that fashion is a language of its very own
  • Vardy has sported head to toe designer in an attempt at ‘power dressing’
  • Rooney is showing she’s a defenceless woman of the people in high street gear

It’s been handbags, heels and walker boots at dawn over the last few days, as Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy make their daily pilgrimages to London High court to bitterly battle it out, hoping to clear their names following years of alleged scandal.

And while some are eagerly following the daily updates from the trial, fashionistas have been equally fascinated by their style.

Stylists like myself firmly believe that fashion is a language of its very own, communicating exactly what the wearer would like to portray without uttering a single word and with that in mind, the wags of the week have made some interesting choices.

Both women favoured no-nonsense neutrals, turning up each day in navy and funereal black, possibly indicating a subconscious awareness of impending career death, but more likely a deliberate choice to show the world – and most importantly, the judge – that despite all previous antics befitting of a footballers wife, they now want to be respected and are taking this process very seriously indeed.

DAY ONE

DAY ONE: Rebekah swept the style stakes on day one, by channelling her inner ‘Duchess of Cambridge’ and wearing a sombre but elegant shirt dress (left) while Coleen (right)  trumped Rebekah on the accessories front, and arrived brandishing not one, but two handbags

Rebekah swept the style stakes on day one, by channelling her inner ‘Duchess of Cambridge’ and wearing a sombre but elegant shirt dress, buttoned up high a la l’office, hair scraped back in a bun Mary Poppins would be proud of and with a handbag large enough to carry all the war-paint and more she might need.

She successfully lifted the look and prevented it from feeling too ‘heavy’ with the addition of some white stiletto heels.

I have no idea if they concealed steel toe caps….

Coleen trumped Rebekah on the accessories front, and arrived brandishing not one, but two handbags.

She was also living proof that the old fashion myth advising against combining blue and black should be thrown out, along with tacky 80’s shell suits.

Despite the turned up cuffs of her Krystal Carrington-esq shoulder padded jacket, Coleen looked a little overpowered by her chosen outfit which drowned her petite frame.

Add this season’s must-have accessory – the walker boot – and I can’t help wondering whether the overall effect was intentional, designed to evoke feelings of empathy for ‘vulnerable’ Coleen.

DAY TWO

On day two, Rebakah asserted her position by power dressing in head to toe black designer (left) while Coleen (right) picked a feminine and floaty dress, positioning her once again as defenceless and innocent, choosing an inexpensive Zara number rather than designer demonstrates Coleen wants to be a ‘woman of the people’

On day two, Rebakah asserted her position by power dressing in head to toe black designer.

From her oversized sunglasses and high neck top, through to the opaque tights and killer heels, there was very little flesh on display, the Bill Cunningham quote ‘fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life’ – or in this case, spats with your fellow wag – comes to mind.

Meanwhile Coleen picked a feminine and floaty dress, positioning her once again as defenceless and innocent, choosing an inexpensive Zara number rather than designer demonstrates Coleen wants to be a ‘woman of the people’ – just don’t pay attention to the single Chanel shoe.

DAY THREE

On day three, Rebekah (left) was clearly feeling considerably more optimistic, her navy and white ensemble positively spring like in comparison to the previous wintry looks whilst Coleen’s (right) feathers must have been more than a little ruffled which was reflected in her crumpled appearance

On day three, Rebekah was clearly feeling considerably more optimistic, her navy and white ensemble positively spring like in comparison to the previous wintry looks, whilst Coleen’s feathers must have been more than a little ruffled which was reflected in her crumpled appearance.

Admittedly, the walker boot is a look even a supermodel would struggle to pull off, so manufacturers take note.

Maybe Coleen’s appearance will inspire a future colab a la Balenciaga x Crocs? Watch this space…
