The elements are an important part of the zodiac and can help you to spot the differences and similarities between the signs. As astrology fans will know, your birth chart is made up of more than just your star sign. Your chart shows you which sign every planet was in at the time of your birth, and each sign is a different element. This means your chart can be lacking or abundant in certain elements. Do you have any water in your chart? What are the water signs?

Astrologer Sue Tompkins writes in her book The Contemporary Astrologer’s Handbook that the elements “provide a construct upon which it is possible to view both the natural world and human behaviour.”

Some of us have an obvious emphasis on some elements in our charts, and some have an under-emphasis.

For example, you may be a Sagittarius with lots of placements in Aries and Leo so fire dominates your chart.

Alternatively you could be an Aquarius with a Libra rising and Gemini Moon, making you very Airy.

Tompkins wrote: “An understanding of the elements and modes does more than foster an understanding of the signs: it can provide a starting point towards understanding the whole horoscope.”

What are the water signs?

The water signs are Scorpio, Pisces, and Cancer.

These three are four away from each other in the zodiac wheel and always between an air sign and a fire sign.

Scorpios are born between October 23 and November 22.

Pisces are born between February 18 and March 20.

Cancer season is from June 21 to July 22.

This isn’t due to lack of trust, but a hate of feeling vulnerable and exposed.

These signs are honest and empathetic, but what you see isn’t what you get.
