Barbie: Official trailer
Kate McKinnon’s ‘Weird Barbie’ has become the “breakout character” from the Barbie movie, and her popularity has led toy company Mattel to release their own limited edition of the doll.
Director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie has exploded in popularity. It has been a record-breaking success after making over $1 billion at the box office less than a month after being released in theatres.
The movie features many hilarious characters, but ‘Weird Barbie’ has stolen the show and made many women nostalgic. She is meant to represent the Barbie doll that little girls would play too roughly with, so her face has been scribbled on, her hair has been cut into an even hairstyle, and has a more wise yet cynical outlook than the rest of the dolls living in Barbie Land.
It has now become a trend in social media for women to show off their own Weird Barbies from childhood, and on TikTok, many users have been posting some funny yet terrifying disfigured Barbies that have had some extreme makeovers.
In one video, a user said: “I feel so bad for my Barbie. She’s walking around in Barbie Land like this!” and showed off a doll with a shaved head only attracted to two plastic legs, and was missing both body and arms.
Other videos have shown dolls glued onto fizzy drink cans, had their arms cut off, had eyeliner drawn on their face and one ‘Weird Barbie’ had even had their head glued onto a green dinosaur body.
However, little girls can now own a less terrifying of version Weird Barbie that looks like the one featured in the movie, as Mattel has announced they will be selling a limited edition ‘Weird Barbie’ based on Kate McKinnon’s character.
The colorful doll will feature a hot pink outfit that appears to be styled like it has been doodled on, hair cut into an uneven spiky style and drawn-on markings on her face.
On the company website, Mattel said: “If anyone knows anything about keeping it weird, it’s Weird Barbie, a breakout character from Barbie The Movie.
“Our doll version wears an outfit inspired by one you’ll see in the feature film, a bright pink dress with colorful artwork and puffy sleeves, and green snakeskin boots. She also features short tousled hair and markings on her face to emulate a doll that’s been played with just a little too much.”

Weird Barbie is available to order on the Mattel website for $50 (£49) until August 18 and is expected to be shipped out next year on May 2024.
In addition to Weird Barbie, Mattel has released a Margot Robbie Barbie and Ryan Gosling Ken doll based on the main characters from the film, and even Gloria, a human character from the movie played by America Ferra, is now available in doll form.
Lisa McKnight, Mattel’s executive vice president and chief brand officer, has said in a statement that the company released the dolls after Barbie became the “cultural event of the summer”.
She said: “With the latest editions to the collection, we are offering even more ways for fans to immerse themselves in Barbie Land and celebrate the characters and stories they see on screen.
“Barbie continues to be the cultural event of the summer, and as we chart Mattel’s path forward, she will continue to serve as an icon of empowerment and inspiration for generations to come.”
