What to wear this weekend: FEMAIL picks a selection of biker jackets to add to your wardrobe

  • They’re never out of fashion, but this season, biker jackets are most definitely in
  • FEMAIL’s Dinah Van Tulleken has picked out these essentials for your wardrobe
  • Where the big designers lead, the High Street follows, even when it comes to something as expensive as leather

THE NEW BIKER

They’re never out of fashion, but this season, biker jackets are most definitely in. That said, the look is a million miles from punk: now they’re sophisticated, stylish and wearable even for those of us who aren’t achingly cool.

On the catwalk, Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen teamed her cropped styles with tulle skirts and bovver boots. At Balenciaga, they were oversized with drop shoulders and worn with all black. Simone Rocha gave a modern twist with beautiful puff sleeves.

LEATHER LUXE

And, where the big designers lead, the High Street follows, even when it comes to something as expensive as leather. Real animal hide is an investment — it will get better with age, but if it’s a stretch at the moment you don’t have to break the bank buying the real thing. The jacket I’m wearing here is £250 from Autograph at M&S, but look below and you’ll see there’s an almost identical piece that’s faux (polyurethane) and only £49.50.

How to wear it? I’m wary of teaming mine with blue jeans, especially stonewash — that’s a look that will always belong to Bros. But I love black leather with off-white denim. And play with textures — your biker will look effortlesssly stylish with cashmere or over a lightweight print dress.

…AND COLOUR

It doesn’t have to be black. Ecobrand Baukjen’s Kara leather jacket comes in forest green, redwood (a burgundy) and purple (below). Oh, and it goes without saying that if you have an old one at the back of your wardrobe, now is the time to dig it out — pre-loved leather is always better.
