A debate erupted on Good Morning Britain today over whether millennials or baby boomers have had a better quality of life.

Broadcaster Dawn Neesom insisted baby boomers had struggled more than younger generations, while journalist Owen Jones argued millennials have faced tougher challenges.

Millennials were born between 1980 and 1995, while baby boomers were born between 1946 and 1964.

Joining Susanna Reid and Ed Balls on the ITV show, Dawn said: ‘Baby boomers expected nothing so everything we got was a bonus, millennials expect everything so everything is a disappointment.’

She continued: ‘Boomers felt optimistic, everything we got was a positive for us because we started off on a low base after the war. Millennials started off from a high base so everything they are expecting is slightly entitled.

Broadcaster Dawn Neesom insisted baby boomers had struggled more than younger generations, while journalist Owen Jones argued millennials have faced tougher challenges

‘Every generation has challenges. We are not really comparing like for like are we, the difference is with attitude, we expected nothing so everything we got was a bonus.’

Owen disagreed with the broadcaster, saying it’s harder for millennials these days as they can’t afford to buy their own homes.

The podcaster said: ‘Half of baby boomers own their own home by 30. For millennials it’s 30 percent. It’s not because millennials are spending all their money on cappuccinos or Netflix, it’s just one basic statistic.

‘Forty years ago, a home cost three times the average salary, it’s now eight and a half times the average salary.

‘It’s just housing costs you spend far more of a percent of your income even if your a private renter.

‘If your a millennial you don’t get council housing. If you do you will be stuck on a waiting list until your retirement.

‘You can’t get a home because house prices are so expensive, but the private renting sector is a rip off.

‘You’re paying huge amounts of your wage packet on private rent.’

Many rushed to Twitter to continue the debate, with many agreeing with Dawn,  saying that the ‘quality of life has gone up for millennials.’

One person wrote: ‘Really interesting debate: quality of life surely has gone up massively for millennials?

‘Food, travel, technology, wages, education Dawn is spot on: which had most self respect, discipline, worth ethic, accountability and responsibility ethos and were more robust?’

Another wrote: ‘Just my observations, but it seems millennials spend most of their money entertaining themselves with electronic devices, computer games, flash cars, eating out etc.

Many agreed with Dawn saying that the ‘quality of life has gone up for millennials’ and they spend their money on entertainment

‘Then complain they’re in debt and cannot afford a deposit on a house. Then it has to be a new one.’

While another said: ‘There is some truth to Dawn’s claim. The quality of life of millennials compared with boomers is much higher.

‘People forget that the boomers bathed in front of an open fire and had to go outside to use the toilet.’

Meanwhile other disagreed saying things are a lot harder for the millennial generation in the current economy.

One said: ‘I was born in 1976 (not sure where that places me) regardless of what group in belong to it’s ridiculous to think that things are easy for young people now.

‘Housing prices are out of control and there are less council houses to go around…all bought up by my generation and before!’

While a second wrote: ‘Boomers got everything handed to them and still complain, Millennials expect the bare minimum, don’t even get that and then get told they’re being unreasonable.’
