Why everyone is going mad for hair gems – and where to buy the £5 gadget

From razor-thin brows to butterfly clips, Y2K beauty trends are having a major comeback – and now it’s hair gems that are going viral. Using a stamping tool you’ll probably recognise from the 00s, TikTokers are adding tons of sparkle to their locks just in time for festival season.

Beauty fans all over are going wild for the blinged-up throwback hairstyle – with the hashtag #hairgems racking up over 19.7 million views on TikTok, and #howtoapplyhairgems bringing in over 21.4k views and counting. It all started when influencer Sophie Murray shared how she used the hair gadget before heading to a festival, in a TikTok video that’s now amassed over 8 million views and 900K likes.

“Look, how fun! I’m going to a festival,” she says in the clip, before using a kid’s toy known as “The Blinger” to stamp tiny crystals into her blonde waves.

Followers quickly flocked to the comment section, with many reminiscing on their memories of using the gadget in their younger years.

“Makes me laugh that [that’s] what I used to do as a kid, all these Gen Zs are doing now as adults,” one person writes.

“When you’re finally old enough to afford and buy all the things you wanted as a little girl,” another jokes.

“I remember seeing the commercial for this in the 90s/early 2000s,” a third says, while a fourth adds, “I begged my parents for this dang thing…and now, 30-ish years later I can do it.”

Sophie writes in her caption that she purchased the styling tool from Amazon, which now – no doubt because of a rise in popularity – will set you back £28.36 here. We’ve spotted the same exact product in Argos, for a more reasonable price of £5 here.

The easy-to-use stamper comes with 75 gems in a variety of colours and shapes that can be applied to clothes, accessories and stationery, but beauty fans have been loving using it on their locks. To remove the gems from your hair, the brand instructs shoppers to simply peel them off – no need to wash out.

In the past week alone, searches for “blinger hair gems” have increased by a whopping 3,100%, according to JustMyLook, along with a 773% increase in searches for “hair gems”.

Alongside baby braids and Euphoria-style makeup, we’re expecting this best-selling blinger machine to be everywhere this festival season. Nab yourself one quickly before they sell out!
