Why you need to know about this celeb-loved skincare that was tested in space

All skincare must go through rigorous testing, but sending it up into space might sound a little, well, over the top.

But 111Skin – which has a legion of celebrity fans – started with a formula that did just that and it’s not just to show off (but maybe a bit).

We’re not lying, in 2011, 111Skin’s managing director, Yannis Alexandrides worked with scientists from the Soviet Space Program to help treat astronauts with wound healing while floating about in space.

The brand’s space testing for a clinic-only product called the Healing Serum inspired its popular Repair Serum Nac Y², which contains an advanced amino acid called NAC to promote the production of glutathione, the body’s ‘master antioxidant’.

There is actually a reasonable argument for the extravagance. Space has been shown to be particularly harsh on human skin, for obvious reasons we suppose, so the theory is that if a skincare product can be made to work up there, it’ll have a good chance of working even better on Earth.

111Skin’s Alexandrides described space as a ‘laboratory for ageing’.

In a previous interview with wellandgood.com. he said: ‘There is no protection from the atmosphere, and space has harmful, intense, cosmic radiation and a lack of gravity, which thins the skin and other organs of the body.

‘If the [skin-care] ingredients work in space, imagine what they can do on Earth!’

Antioxidants, such as glutathione, have been shown to protect skin against free radical damage, helping to preserve skin, and slow the ageing process.

The serum also contains Escin, an anti-inflammatory sourced from horse chestnut extract, and brightening Vitamin C, and is described by the brand as a ‘clock-stopper’.

But we must warn you, ‘it’s not cheap ‘stopping the clock’ doesn’t come cheap – in fact Repair Serum Nac Y² will set you back £240 (or £204 if you subscribe)… but the reviews are good.

One person wrote online: ‘I’ve been using the serum in both my AM and PM routine and I can feel and see a difference in my skin after just 2 weeks of use. My skin texture has evened out and my make up looks much smoother than before. My fine lines are a lot less noticeable. Could not recommend enough!’

While another satisfied shopper added: ‘From someone who has suffered from acne marks for years, this has completely changed my skin after a few weeks! I have used the serum both day and night and have noticed the marks have faded! Feeling a lot more confident.’

A third enthused: ‘I tried this and used it everyday for a couple of weeks and people commented on how great my skin looks. It has given me this natural glow and even, healthy skin. I’m hooked!’

111Skin, which uses the ‘cornerstone’ formula NAC Y2 in its products, is particularly well-known for its sheet masks, thanks to the many A-listers who have shared photos of themselves using them.

We’re talking Jennifer Anniston, Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley, Hayley Bieber and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Margot Robbie went so far as to say she was ‘obsessed’ with the brand and its sheet masks.

And if her skin is anything to go by, we want what she’s having.
