Queen Elizabeth, much likeKate Middleton, usually prefers to do her own makeup for the most part of the year. The only exception is her annual Christmas Day broadcast, when she apparently asks makeup artist Marilyn Widdess for expert help.
With COVID-19 cases on the rise, and the possibility of restrictions being imposed last-minute, does this mean the Queen will have to do her own makeup for her 2021 speech? We asked royal author Duncan Larcombe for his take on the situation.
“My understanding is the Queen’s staff are sticking to the absolute letter of advice, which means a vaccinated makeup artist would be allowed to come in, but they are likely to have to test negative the morning they go. That includes the whole production team recording the speech, as well,” he tells OK!.
If the Queen has used Marilyn for her makeup for years and years, it’s likely she still could this year. Though if she isn’t vaccinated, the Queen will have to turn to someone else for help – or do her makeup herself.
The news on Her Majesty the Queen using a makeup artist just once each year comes from royal stylist Angela Kelly’s book, titled The Other Side of the Coin: the Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe.
“You might be surprised to know that this is the only occasion throughout the year when Her Majesty does not do her own make-up," writes Kelly.
The Queen isn’t the only member of the Royal Family who prefers doing her own makeup. As mentioned, Kate also has become something of a dab hand at an applicator brush. She even did her own wedding day makeup back in 2011, after reportedly having lessons with close friend and professional Daniel Martin.
Kate’s hair, however, is often styled by a professional – hence why her curls are always so bouncy. It’s also just been revealed how influential the Duchess’ hair looks really are – and have been. Hair expertsLongevitaanalysed Google Trends data to establish which of Kate’s hairstyles sparked the highest amount of online searches.
Coming out top of the list is Kate’s full fringe from September 2015. This look was searched 426% above the average search volume of her other styles. Unsurprisingly, Kate’s second most influential hairstyle is from her wedding day in April 2011. The Duchess broke a 350-year-old tradition by wearing her hair down for the occasion, which prompted searches to rise 336% above average.
We’d struggle to pick our favourite Kate look.
