You’ve been using cheese grater wrong as people realise what small side is for

As a nation of cheese lovers, it's safe to say most households probably have a cheese grater stashed into a cupboard somewhere.

And usually one side of the kitchen tool gets used more than others.

Everyone has their favourite side of the grater, right?

However, it appears this bunch of Brits had not touched half of their graters because they were baffled by what they were supposed to be for.

You know the side that is too small for grating cheese and a pain to wash up?

Yes, that one.

Wanting to learn how to utilise all four sides of a grater, one Brit took to Reddit for some answers.

They wrote: "Learning to cook for myself, but still can’t work out what these sides are supposed to do…"

Well, it turns out that the small holed quarter of the grater is not just for devouring your scouring sponge when washing up.

Apparently, the small side is for zesting.

So for those who want to add a bit more flare to their cooking or perhaps some chocolate shavings to their hot chocolate, then the zesting side is your best friend.

"Left is for zesting fruit," one shared on Reddit. Another informed: "Zesting fruit, shaving chocolate, grating nutmeg, getting tiny shavings of Parmesan."

While a third voiced: "The thin side is for zesting orange and lemon skin, or grating things like garlic or horseradish."

So if one side is for grating a block of cheese (the side we all know and love) and the small holed quarter is for zesting, what are the other two areas for?

If you're not familiar with the instrument then let us give you a further hand.

The side with the slits are used for slicing which is great when used on cheese and vegetables that you are not confident slicing a knife with – and it saves on the washing up.

So, what's the fourth side for?

For the quarter that is slightly smaller then the grating side, these are perfect for 'shredding' cheese into teenier pieces.

This can help the cheese melt quicker than if they were grated.

Looks like a grater is more useful than just for depleting your washing up sponge stash after all!
