Australian TV legend Jonathan Coleman has died following a four-year battle with prostate cancer.

According to a statement by his devastated family, the broadcaster passed away peacefully on Friday night at the age of 65.

"Jono and I have been soulmates for close to 40 years," said his heartbroken wife Margot.

She continued: "We have been fortunate to live a rich and wonderful life and I have been lucky enough to watch up-close someone with enormous talent and the special gift to make people laugh."

"I will miss him beyond words and with the support of our gorgeous children, Oscar and Emily, and their partners, we will continue to live in the manner he wanted.

"When I asked Jono recently how he wanted to be remembered, he said, 'For doing a good deed every day."' Such was the generosity and caring nature of the love of my life."

Jonathan's devastated son Oscar also paid tribute to his late father in a touching Instagram post.

Sharing a snap of himself wrapping his arm round his dad, he simply wrote: "Love you dad. Rest in peace @jonocoleman."

His former Studio 10 co-star Jessica Rowe took to social media and penned: "'My heart breaks today remembering the joyful Jono Coleman,' she wrote on Instagram.

"He spread love & laughter wherever he went. The most I’ve ever laughed was when he covered himself in sausages to lead a dachshund race on Melbourne Cup day. I’m sending all my love to Margot & Oscar & Emily. Vale Jono."

He started off his career as a presenter on the afternoon children's program Simon Townsend's Wonder World in 1979.
