Avril Lavigne quit music after feeling ‘trapped’ in her own body

For anyone growing up in the early noughties, Avril Lavigne was one of the biggest stars in music.

Her 2002 debut album, Let Go, featured the singles Complicated and Sk8er Boi, which rose to the top of the charts, skyrocketing her career overnight.

Avril’s next two records, Under My Skin and The Best Damn Thing continued her success in the industry, but it all changed in 2014.

Before her massive comeback tour in 2019, there were five years when the singer was off the stage and away from music entirely.

It all came after she was diagnosed with Lyme disease, changing her career path suddenly in a shock for fans.

Now celebrating her 38th birthday, Avril is back, but there was a time when it seems she was away from the spotlight for good.

Why did Avril Lavigne quit singing?

In 2014, Avril was diagnosed with Lyme disease, leaving her in bed “for two years” and was left feeling “trapped” in her own body.

In an interview with Billboard, she said: “I had accepted that I was dying. And I felt in that moment like I was underwater and drowning, and I was trying to come up to gasp for air.

“And literally under my breath, I was like, ‘God, help me keep my head above the water.'”

Her 2019 comeback album was titled Head Above Water, a nod to the difficult years she had dealt with before.

In an interview with USA Today, Avril opened up about her comeback, saying: "Music has been more healing than ever for me.

"I was at a point where I wasn't sure whether I'd be working or even doing music again, and then I started writing songs from my bedroom.

“Head Above Water and Warrior were the first two songs that I wrote, and then they just kept coming.

“It was cool for me to see because it showed me that music is such a big part of who I am without even thinking about it or trying to make a record."

Lyme disease affects many different celebrities, with Justin Bieber, Kelly Osbourne, Amy Schumer, Ben Stiller and Shania Twain all dealing with it as well.

What is Lyme disease?

As stated on the NHS website, Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks.

Symptoms include a circular rash around a tick bite mark that can appear up to three months after being bitten, but more typically between one to four weeks.

The affects can vary from person to person, with its severity also fluctuating between people.

It mostly causes flu-like symptoms including a high temperature, feeling hot and shivery, headache, muscle and joint pain, and tiredness and loss of energy.
