Cliff Richard distraught by sad death of soulmate Olivia Newton-John

Sir Cliff Richard is said to be utterly heartbroken by the death of his close pal and “soulmate” Olivia Newton-John.

Olivia, who is best known for her starring role in Grease, passed away at age 73, her husband confirmed on Monday (August 8).

Cliff’s friend, DJ Mike Read, revealed that the We Don’t Talk Anymore hitmaker has been “heartbroken” following the death of the Hollywood star.

Mike told Daily Mirror: “I got an email from Cliff last night and he’s devastated.”

It’s been reported that Cliff and Olivia had a touching friendship that spanned more than half a century.

A close friend added: “Olivia counted Cliff as one of her closest friends. He was always there for her, no matter what. It’s little wonder it’s hit him so hard. They were soulmates.”

Sir Cliff, who is yet to comment publicly on his friend’s death, played a crucial role in catapulting the star to success during the early 70s.

In 1971, Olivia was invited to become a regular guest singer on Cliff’s very own variety TV show, The Cliff Richard Show.

In a previous interview before Olivia’s death, he said: “We hit it off straight away. She was the sort of soulmate that you meet and, you know, is a friend for life.”

The Grease star, who played Sandy Olsson in the 70s hit movie, also went on tour as one of Cliff’s backing singers during her rise to fame.

Cliff later admitted he fell for her: “When I and many of us were in love with Olivia, she was engaged to someone else. I’m afraid I lost the chance.”

It comes after the actress died after repeated treatments for cancer, after battling the illness for more than 30 years, her family announced.
