Corries Charlie Lawson slams Jedward over controversial King Charles III tweet

Coronation Street's Charlie Lawson has weighed in after X Factor twins Jedward urged King Charles III to "hand back the six Irish counties".

The Irish twins – John and Edward Grimes – have already caused a stir on social media following the Queen's death, by saying the monarchy should be abolished.

And they've now tweeted about the new monarch.

Their post said: "King Charles should hand back the six Irish counties on his visit to Northern Ireland – No war! Just words! It's time."

Actor Charlie, who starred as Jim McDonald in the ITV soap, was among those to comment.

"Shut up y'pair of t****!!" he tweeted.

Charlie – who is from Northern Ireland – also waded in after the twins suggested that "people in denial about Britain's Imperialist past need to get a grip".

"Change is hard when your education is a censored version of history," they posted.

But Charlie tweeted: "Oh shut up!"

Jedward's comments have sparked debate on Twitter in recent days.

While some people have criticised their tweets, others have defended the singers.

The pair have also addressed the backlash.

"Victims of colonisation are entitled to express how they feel!" they tweeted.

"Beyond all the celebratory royal posts and propaganda the majority [don't give a f***]."

The singers – who were on the sixth series of The X Factor back in 2009 – also revealed that they have faced threats over their remarks.

"Psychos are sending us death threats!" they tweeted.

"Your threatening behaviour and criminality will not intimidate us."

Charlie made his debut on the cobbles as Jim in 1989 and he has appeared in the ITV soap on and off since then.

The 62-year-old's other TV credits include Harry's Game, Bread and The Bill.
