It’s fair to say Countdown has had its fair share of presenters and hosts since it first hit the silver screen back in 1982.
The most recent host to lead the show to success is former Weakest Link star Anne Robinson who has faced a wave of backlash since she took on the position in June.
One person who was previously rumoured to be in the front running for filling before Nick Hewer stepped down was fellow broadcaster Gyles Brandreth.
The 73-year-old has regularly been seen making guest appearances on the show alongside maths whizz Rachel Riley and lexicographer Susie Dent.
Speaking to the Express.co.uk, he said: “People used to speculate in the old days when Richard [Whiteley] died and when Carol Vorderman moved on, I hosted a special programme.
“There was lots of speculation, but the truth is, I do so many different things, I wouldn’t be able to.
“I wouldn’t want to be tied down to be doing one big thing like that,” he added. “I don’t think I would be [asked], it’s not quite my style, I like being a guest.”
The TV presenter was good friends with the show’s first gameshow host Richard, who sadly passed away in 2005 at the age of 61.
Since his death, the show has been hosted by Des Lynam, Des O’Connor, Jess Stelling and Nick Hewer before Anne Robinson stepped into the role back in June.
But it appears that tensions are rising on set between Anne, Rachel and Susie as rumours involving an alleged feud swirl around the trio.
Currently neither presenter has addressed the allegations, however the new mum has shared her thoughts on the new TV host with OK! Magazine.
She told the publication: “[Anne] found her feet very quickly and soon made the show her own, she’s comfortable bantering with the contestants. She asks them a lot of questions and we get to hear from them a lot more.
“I don’t think anyone would describe Anne as cuddly. She's very matter of fact. To be honest though, due to the pandemic we haven’t been able to socialise like we normally would.”
