David Mitchell has got candid about going through the “very frightening” time when his comedic partner and friend Robert Webb had to undergo open-heart surgery.
Despite the fact that Robert Webb is currently dancing his heart out on the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor, only two years ago the comedian discovered he had a heart condition and had to undergo emergency surgery.
David joined Jermaine Jenas and Alex Scott on The One Show on Wednesday, where he opened up about his pal’s stint on the BBC show and finding out about Robert’s health issues after a routine medical checkup during filming.
Alex grilled him about Robert’s performance on the show, saying: “While we’ve got you here, Strictly, we know you’re not a fan of camping, dancing you wanna stay clear of, but your mate Robert Webb is on the show.
“Did you watch his first performance?” she asked to which David gushed: “I certainly did and it was brilliant.
“And I would say (he was) underpraised by the judges. He was due at least another four to six marks I’d say. So yeah, it’s brilliant.”

Alex then delved into the topic of Robert’s heart troubles, saying: “He’s spoken a lot about his heart surgery and what he’s been through so to see him perform on Strictly is absolutely incredible.
“How did it affect you when he spoke to you about the news?”
David opened up and said: “It was very frightening because we were filming Back, the show we do for Channel 4, and he went for an insurance medical and two weeks later he had open-heart surgery.

“So it was a complete shock and surprise and very serious condition which immediately needed dealing with.
“And something that not long ago they couldn’t deal with, it’s amazing how surgery has progressed.
“So it was very frightening but it all went brilliantly and he’s fully recovered.”
The star continued: “This was a thing in the background he wasn’t aware of and now he’s feeling better than he has for years,
“Hence he’s agreed to dance every week potentially until Christmas.”
Alex then sweetly joked: “He has got his best mate as number one cheerleader though.”
Robert has made it through to week two of the competition alongside partner Dianne Buswell, with a score of 20.
