Drake is one of the most successful rappers of all time, and fans of the 6 God have been eagerly awaiting his latest album for some time now. He first announced in 2019 that he was working on an album, and spent 2020 dropping hints and eventually revealing the name. And now, it appears that the album is ready for a surprise release.
Drake was quiet all of 2020
Compared to previous years, Drake kept a low profile in 2020. In May 2020, he released Dark Lane Demo Tapes, which contained several unreleased tracks from throughout his career. The released was paired with the announcement that his sixth album would be released in the summer.
Drake’s engineer confirmed in July 2020 that the album was “90% done,” and Drizzy announced the title as Certified Lover Boy a few weeks later. That same day, he released the lead single “Laugh Now Cry Later” with Lil Durk.
Any other news about the album was kept under lock and key, as Drake barely hinted at it on social media.
Drake planned on releasing his new album in summer 2020
Everything seemed set for Drake’s album to be released by the end of the summer last year. But summer came and went and no album was to be found.
On Drake’s birthday in October, his label OVO Sound released a video saying that Certified Lover Boy‘s released was being pushed until January 2021. The announcement video references several of his past projects, including So Far Gone, Nothing Was the Same, and Take Care.
For the rest of 2020 and most of January 2021, Drake has kept quiet about if the album actually will be released in January or delayed again. Fans might have just gotten their answer.
Drake dropped a hint that the album is being finished
There are just a few weeks left in January 2021, and Drake fans everywhere are eager for the release of Certified Lover Boy. However, given both Drake and OVO’s silence, many people believed that January would come and go with no new album from Drizzy.
It appears, though, that they could be gearing up to drop Certified Lover Boy by surprise this Friday, January 22. Fridays have become the standard release day in the music industry (thanks in part to his 2015 mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late), and all signs point to the album being ready to go.
In a photo posted to his Instagram story, Drake is photographed from behind as he’s sitting over a mixing console in a dimly-lit studio. An OVO sweater is draped over the chair, and the “Hotline Bling” singer seems to be hard at work.
Given that the album was almost done last summer and Drake is known for working on projects up until the minute they’re released, it’s safe to say that Drizzy and his production team are putting the finishing touches on Certified Lover Boy and it could be available sooner than we think.
