Frank Skinner breaks down in tears live on air as co-host fights for life

    Broadcasting legend Frank Skinner broke down in tears live on his radio show today with the star overcome with emotion at sad news.

    Frank, 66, who is known for hosting TV shows Baddiel and Skinner and Room 101, as well as his various radio stints, was hosting his Absolute Radio show on Saturday morning (April 1).

    Breaking down in the final few moments of his show, Frank went to reveal to his listeners that his close pal and former co-host, Gareth Richards, is fighting for his life.

    Before getting onto the emotional topic of Gareth's health, Frank started talking about his friend and how he worked with him on the show.

    Frank said: "One thing you have to learn to do in this line of work is out on a false front and the show must go, that's what happened this morning."

    Frank then spoke to his co-host Emily Dean, when he said: "We have been doing this show for 14 years and when we first did the pilot for it, me and Emily, it was rubbish, just the two of us. Couldn't do it.

    "We got a guest on the next one who was Gareth Richards, who was brilliant on her and we asked him to do the show. and so for the first few years it was me, Em and Gareth.

    "He became a very close friend and has supported me on tour. Gareth and Emily are very very close."

    Frank the became overcome with emotion as he revealed that Gareth had been in an accident during the week.

    Choking back tears, Frank said: "Gareth was in a very big road accident this week and it is not looking great for Gareth.

    "He is in hospital and he is fighting and it's not looking great. I didn't want to do this show without mentioning him."

    Frank added: "He is a fantastic bloke. I don't know if any of you do pray but if you do, give one for Gareth this week."

    An emotional Emily then chimed in with: "We love you, Gareth."

    Fans flocked to Twitter to throw their support behind Gareth, with many moved to tears themselves after Frank's emotional monologue.

    "Really emotional hearing Frank Skinner talk about him just now. We're all rooting for you Gareth," penned one listener.

    Another added: "Moved to tears by Frank Skinner this morning, all our love to Gareth.."

    While a third said: "Oh it was heart wrenching to hear Frank that upset.. Shows how much they all love Gareth!"
