Inside BBC’s Carol Kirkwood split from ex husband as she announces engagement

BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood announced live on air this morning (May 23) the heartwarming news that she is engaged.

Carol delighted her co-stars when she confirmed that her partner proposed during a recent holiday, saying: "It’s lovely news and we’re both thrilled."

While Carol has not revealed the identity of her husband-to-be, she has previously told how the pair have been together since at least June 2021.

Carol has previously sung her fiancé's praises, saying that even at 2:45am when she wakes up to get ready for work he will make her a cup of tea.

The presenter told Prima: "I don’t want to say too much about my boyfriend, but I will say that he is very kind and very funny – he’s always making me laugh. And extremely handsome, as well."

Carol's split from ex husband

It isn't the first time the weather presenter has been engaged; she was previously married to ex-husband Jimmy Kirkwood before they divorced in 2008.

Carol married Jimmy in the 1990s, while in her early days at the BBC.

Jimmy is best known as a cricket player for Northern Ireland – but he also played hockey for Great Britain and picked up a gold medal in the Summer Olympics 1988.

Why did Carol and Jimmy split?

Carol has never disclosed the exact reason for her and Jimmy's split and she kept details about their relationship under wraps during their romance.

However, she admits that since their divorce she has a new-found freedom.

Carol told The Sun: "I was married for a long time and I got married quite young so it’s nice doing things I have the freedom to do now."

She also told Radio Times: "I found myself when I got divorced.

"I started to do things and to think, 'I'm not going to say no, I'm going to say yes!

"I'm braver now. I've flown with the Red Arrows, jumped out of planes with the Red Devils. When I was younger I would never have done that because I'd have thought, 'Too dangerous!' Now I think, 'Oh, you've got to live your life!'"
