Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg seem like an unlikely friendship on the surface. She’s a 79-year-old, preppy former model, celebrity chef, and lifestyle guru. He’s a 49-year-old gangster rapper, entrepreneur, and marijuana enthusiast. Yet the chemistry between them works.
If you haven’t had a chance yet to catch their VH1 show Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party Challenge, well, you’re definitely missing out. The fact is that Stewart and Snoop Dogg are polar opposites. With guests that have included Seth Rogen, 50 Cent, Rick Ross, Matthew McConaughey, Ice Cube, and Kathy Griffin, each episode is a party that further cements the bond between Snoop and Stewart. It is charming, mostly wholesome TV with an eclectic cast of characters that shouldn’t be so delightful together and yet, they are.
That said, it’s still a strange friendship between Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart. Let’s take a look at a few reasons why.
Their friendship all started with some mashed potatoes
Martha Stewart initiated the friendship with Snoop Dogg in 2008 when she invited him to appear as a guest on The Martha Stewart Show, according to MarthaStewart.com. The two stars bonded over a bowl of mashed potatoes. Snoop even taught Martha some new slang, “foshizzle.” Their chemistry worked. In an interview with Today show, Stewart said, “What an odd couple we were.”
In 2009, Stewart invited Snoop back to make brownies, which are the favorite dessert of stoners, so this set up the pot jokes well. She patiently explained the ins and outs of making the perfect brownie. Oprah Magazine reported on the banter between the two stars, pointing out the number of pot related jokes Snoop made, including, “Why not bake them at 420 degrees?”
It’s a mutual admiration society between these two friends. Stewart opened up about their friendship in her interview on the Today show saying, “I like his laid-back energy. I like his outspokenness. I like his sense of timing.” Snoop returned the gushing praise in the same interview: “I love Martha, like I love her for real. Like, when I see her away from me I get jealous when I see other people with her. But then I have to understand, she’s Martha Stewart, so she has to give the world what they want.”
Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart pined for each other online
After his appearances on the Martha Stewart Show, several years went by before they were reunited. However, in 2010, Snoop started mentioning Martha Stewart online, Vulture revealed. He reached out to Stewart on Twitter about throwing a bachelor party for Prince William. In 2013, Snoop tweeted a throwback photo of their brownie baking episode. In 2014, Snoop revealed that Martha was the inspiration behind his limited-edition candle.
Also in 2014, Stewart took part in a Reddit AMA. She was asked, “What’s it like being friends with Snoop Dogg? Stewart answered, “I wish I were closer friends with Snoop Dogg.” She also requested he join the AMA, writing, “Where’s Snoop? I have brownies FOR YOU!”
Then, in 2015 they were seated next to each other at the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber. As the show progressed, the two friends’ banter turned hilarious. Stewart paid tribute to Snoop at the beginning of the roast, admitting that the highest-rated episode of the Martha Stewart Show was the one on which they made brownies together.
Later, during an interview with Seth Meyers, Stewart admitted, “I was totally high,” during the Justin Bieber roast from sitting next to Snoop inhaling his fumes.
Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg teamed up for a potluck show
In August 2016, Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg announced their new VH1 show Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. The show features Stewart and Snoop hosting famous friends for a “half-baked evening of cocktails, cooking, conversation, and fun where nothing is off limits.”
Leading up to the cooking show’s premiere, Snoop did an interview with Rolling Stone, in which he said, “I’ve never met anyone like Martha Stewart. When we come together, it’s a natural combination of love, peace, and harmony.” Stewart took to Twitter to share a selfie, writing, “Snoop is cool!! And he can cook! Sort of !!! His way, which is unique and interesting, about to be revealed on vh1.”
The innuendo-filled show premiered in November 2016. It’s run for three seasons so far. It’s been nominated for an Emmy. Stewart and Snoop were nominated for an MTV Music Video Award for Best On Screen Duo, as well as an NAACP Image Award.
Snoop wrote his own cookbook, From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes From Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen, and Stewart wrote the foreword: “Snoop and I have a special bond that dates back to when he first appeared on the Martha Stewart Show in 2008. Our relationship was born from our connection to food as we whipped up some cognac mashed potatoes and green brownies.”
Here’s hoping for a fourth season of their show and for their truly delightful friendship to continue for decades!
