In a new TikTok video, the ‘American Idol’ alum, who criticizes the lingerie brand and its former CEO Leslie Wexner on ‘Victoria’s Secret’, says that the intention of her song ‘was never to take down a brand.’
AceShowbiz -Singer Jax has responded to a letter from Victoria’s Secret’s CEO Amy Hauk following the release of her viral song, “Victoria’s Secret”. Taking to her TikTok account on Saturday, August 13, the “American Idol” alum shared that the intention of her song “was never to take down a brand.”
“The intention of the song was never to go up against any specific brand,” said Jax. “The whole point was to go up against the whole culture. There are a bunch of young girls my age running marketing over there and hard-working models. This is no knock on the models. Those are powerful, beautiful girls. But at the same time, it’s not exactly my job to keep up with the growth of a corporation.”
In her video, Jax went on to explain that the single, which debuted at No. 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, was inspired by a young girl she previously babysat who felt insecure about her body. “I’m just a songwriter. I sing about my truth and then I hope that people relate,” she shared. “And I feel bad that there has to be some damage control on that front because I did that.”
“The point of the song is he realized he was getting called out by a culture of women standing up for themselves. So then he liquidated all the money and ghosted and went off the grid. Now we’re all sitting here with body problems and he has billions of dollars. That doesn’t sit right with me,” she continued.
She went on to say that it’s “pretty bada**” that the Victoria’s Secret CEO caught wind of her single, before encouraging those whose voices have not been heard to speak up. “I am asking anyone who feels like they never had a voice, or ever had a say in the matter to comment on this video,” she urged. “You let them know what you need to feel safe and represented and comfortable and beautiful in today’s society.”
In “Victoria’s Secret”, Jax called out the brand and its former billionaire CEO, Leslie Wexner, for profiting off young women and contributing to their negative body images. “I know Victoria’s secret/ And girl, you wouldn’t believe/ She’s an old man who lives in Ohio/ Making money off of girls like me/ Cashing in on body issues/ Selling skin and bones with big boobs/ I know Victoria’s secret/ She was made up by a dude,” she sings.
After the song went viral, Victoria’s Secret issued an open letter, which was penned by the brand’s CEO, on Instagram. “I can wholeheartedly say that we are all committed to building a community where everyone feels seen and respected,” Amy shared in an August 11 Instagram post. “And if we mess up or can do better, we want to know. We truly value your voice and are working to find new ways to listen and bring you into the conversation.”
